The 2007 Selmer "Bird" models will be the African Flamingo.

ALL THE SAXES WILL NOT HAVE A HIGH F#!

You read that correct. All 3 models will only go to high F and will also have black pearls on the Limited models.

Altos:
Reference Limited Alto
Refernece Standard Alto

Tenor:
Reference 36 Limited Tenor

Dont know yet when they will be shipping but am told that the limited number could be less then other versions.

I sax pictures of the engraving pattern and honestly, it is quite nice. I will post pictures as soon as I have some, on our new Selmer Paris Pro Shop page (link and info coming soon).

Hmmm. Why is it that the first thing I thought of when I saw the engraving was:

Dave,

The engraving looks almost 'tribal' by design but very appealing. I would love to see the limited edition models with more ornate engraving and black pearls. One thing's for sure, they ain't going to be cheap.

And don't forget the special edition John Waters' Pink Flamingos Reference. Comes with its own scoop...

Now that's actually the boldest move in saxophone design in some time. I think it'll cost them in sales, but it's the right thing to do. Nothing hampers the natural progression of altissimo more than the high F# key.
Well, with the exception of free jazz...

Finally Selmer does away with the High F#. They must have been reading some of the comments on this forum. Honestly this could be one of the smartest marketing decisions they've made for their high end gear. Now if only they offer this option on all their ref and III horns they'd have a real winner.
As for the engraving......it's still no match for the SBA....but it's getting better.

There are a lot of nice looking birds out there; they should have left the Flamingo pace Earl Bostic, IMHO.

Isn't a Yardbird actually a chicken?;)

I really love the old engraving. Especially the BAs boat on a lake scenes.
Same here, but you'd be hard to find engravers that can really pull that kind of stuff off. The old conns had that kind of artistry.

Mostly though I just want that no F# to be offered on all their ref horns. It's not going to cost them a dime to do this and I see no reason they should up the cost for the customers. The unfortionate part is I already have a ref tenor and won't be purchasing another, unless I can get a ref 54 alto with no F# for a decent price.

Is it just me, or is that bird a bit cheesy-looking?

I thought the Kook was a lot better (this is a relative comparison)...but still a far, far
cry from the beauty that Jason-meister could put into it.

Yeah the flamingo is a little goofy looking. I thought the Kook was sharper but there's room for lots of improvement. And I agree Jason could have done a better job, but does he still engrave?

I totally agree Heath! The instruments will cost them less to produce and they will, no doubt, charge more for them. Very smart marketing! ;)
