Hello
I just got a sax as per the title. I've been told it is a Tenor. The serial is 622xx and from what I have gathered it is a 1955 made in Paris. I see lacquer is a big subject and I would sat it is about 50 to 60% good. There is some splattering of a corrosive substance that can be seen on the back of the bell. There is a couple of small dings and a bracket seems to have been soldered back on.
I m a guitar collector and dont need the horn so whats it worth and anyone got a vintage Fender or Gibson to swop.

Those mouthpieces may garner some $$$ as well. High quality pictures of them would help.

Nice snag!

I have a 1979 Fender Strat, tobacco sunburst hardtail with a rosewood fretboard, 100% original and near mint condition I will trade for that horn, if it has the neck to it. PM me if you are serious.
That sax appears to be a relac, so take it's value with a grain of salt.

Not wanting to rain on your parade - it's one very nice horn, but it looks as though it may have been re lacquered in the past. I say this because the engraving looks a little faint in the last picture and there appears to be tarnish and even finger (or hand) prints under the lacquer. Also, the engraving seems to be under the lacquer rather than through it, as it was on American finished horns.

I only mention this because it does affect the value, and if I think it my be a re lacquer then the chances are that someone else will too!

No thanks, I really don't want to let go of my strat but would trade if for a 6. The OP is looking for Fenders and Gibsons, do you have any of those flavors? I'm always interested in amps, but my wife sure isn't. She hates my 100 watt Marshall.

Sorry but vintage is older than me and I'm 46. The swop maybe stupid also as I'm in Johannesburg. Didn't think that one through.
How do I tell if it's relaquered.
I think our geographical location would make it tough to trade. If you look at the engraving, it doesn't appear to be sharp and well defined which indicates the original lacquer was taken off with a buffer and new lacquer was re-applied. The color of the current lacquer shows it was refinished a long time ago, possibly even a factory job. You have a nice horn there, it wouldn't hurt to get it into playing condition, then you could sell it for much more than the current condition it is in.

I agree.

Regarding the issue of original/relacquer: Put up some more pictures and you'll get a host of responses - some well-informed. It's usually best to assume relac and price accordingly. For an early Mk VI in good mechanical condition, it may well still draw in excess of $5k - even from a dealer.

Include also pictures of the neck and mouthpieces - depending on what they are, they may draw several hundreds each if desirable bits of the same era.

Like I said, you made a good snag.

Congrats.

Was I talking to myself? [rolleyes]

A 50 year old strat is worth much more than what you have.
So sad. I wonder where my '65 Strat is these days... and my '68 Les Paul Custom... and my ES-335... and my ES-347... and my '65 Mk VI...

Hi, my name is George and I'm a Gear Head.

S'cuse me while I have a coffee and cry.
