Series 1 Tenor neck strap hook
Hi all just wondering about thoughts on moving the neck strap hook on the horn in my previous post..has anyone done this and if so how far down...I have moved them on all the 10ms I have owned and do feel that this hook is a little to high as well ..it will leave a scare but I want to play this forever so I want it to be as comfortable as possible..
Peace

This is a pretty common modification in general. Moving the strap will potentially change how both thumbs want to "sit" when at rest, or as default positions, aside from also having an option of changing how your horn balances (how much or how little natural pressure the weight exerts, as far as how hard the mouthpiece presses toward you).

When I do a complete keywork replacement (I have done this a bunch of times) I place the straphook last, and there is a lot of trial and error that goes into its placement, i.e. I will temporarily solder it into numerous places, usually, before deciding and finalizing its placement. Its best location is purely a matter of personal taste and feel, i.e. the placement where the horn feels most natural to you, and where you think best and easiest, is its correct placement.

What do you mean by complete keywork replacement?

I play an SBA that I replaced all the keywork on because it came to me of relatively sound neck and body, but with the keywork a total loss. Have done something over 9 "modernizations" (I don't know how many, but it's 9+). I'm modernizing the table on a Rascher-period New Aristocrat now (probably without a strap ring move, but we'll see when it's done). I've been known for this kind of work for around 20 years, just not to people who started using this forum 15 years ago or less, because I haven't used it much. I'll probably go back to not using it much, soon.

On every job of that type, placing the straphook is the final balancing touch for ergonomics, and it's crucial to how the hands orient at rest and in motion, and to everything about how the whole horn feels to play.

So you mean you put some keys from a different SBA onto another SBA? How does the keywork go bad?

Modernizing a table? Do you mean you put a selmer like table on a vintage horn? I'm trying to imagine what could be modernized because the bell keys would still be on the left side? I think of like a Buffet or something that has what looks like a Selmer table, but in reality isn't.

No. I took all of the keywork off the SBA and replaced it with keywork from my Taiwan tenor (I have a line of Taiwan tenors) because the SBA's keywork was unrescuable.

There is a thread about this with photos somewhere on this forum....

There are photos on my site that answer your other question. Here, too, in the Conn area.

I think the reason you're having a hard time understanding it is that none of this kind of work has been done much in the past.

Palo has done several of these and photos have been at his website. I think the photos and reporting were more about putting modern Selmer-style keywork on old Conns. There are a few people who have done this on a small number of instruments. Demand is low, the engineering and craftsmanship required are high, so they remain pretty much one- or two-offs.

Thus the reason the three ring design of the Zephyr is the best. Buescher made a fine horn if one prefers a more delicate sound.
I've played Buescher tenors more than most people and "delicate" is far from the whole story. What they are is protean. They can give you any sound you want but you gotta know what you're after.
