Hey everyone! Back with a new video. In this video I go over 10 different types of saxophone soloists and demonstrate their playing. Which one are YOU? Let me know!

The problem, Dave, is that you sound fantastic in all those modes, even the scoopmeister. (Though players of the "interpretive dancer" school make me want to close my eyes just to prevent seasickness; my model for movement while playing is Johnny Hodges...)

I feel attacked... Shameful #7 here...

Great playing, Although I did expect a chosen one style to be coming through at the end.

Really nice playing, you sound great. All that moving around is just distracting though. I have never used the blues scale thing, I just don't think about music that way. I'm working on leaving more space and being more musical in general. Thanks for sharing, I needed a good laugh.

I think my favorite was #10 (Scoops!), although #2 (Less Is More) was hilarious as well. What's remarkable is how many of these caricatures can actually be assigned pretty reliably to players we've all seen -- not just those of us on SOTW, but plenty of pros. I see #1 (Interpretive Dancer) all over the place, even in the classical sax world.

I don't know, but its the type who can do a fall without that juvenile breath sound and without hearing the individual keys going down at the end. Listen to more old records.

You don't need to play anywhere near that many scoops to be #10. One every 4 bars will do it. I found I was doing it as a kind of mental pause when I couldn't think of what to play next. I cut way back after that...or at least I hope I did.

But what I am is really a variation on #7: "Yeah, I Know Chords" plus "Yeah, I Know the Major and Minor Scales."

I'm impressed with how convincing you sounded in nearly all of these "caricatures".

They were funny, but they were all quite musical as well. Well done!

Yeah, I guess if I had a style I'd be the guy that scoops too much. I think you could add an eleventh style and it showed up in just about every one you did and that's the guy who scrunches up his face and gets all red like he's having a painful bowel movement. ;)
