  1. Sax Repair, Maintenance and Modification
Hello, I purchased a new Yamaha alto sax back in about 2017, played it casually at home for about two years, and now haven't touched it in about 15 months due to various distractions. The sax has been in a case the whole time in my basement in a general open area. I have time now to get back...
  2. Book Reviews
Hi all, I just wanted to give a shout-out to master repairman, Stephen Howard's book Saxophone Manual: Choosing, Setting Up and Maintaining a Saxophone. Although I'm not ready to fully tear down, tweak, and reassemble my own horns, I found it a very nice overview, which instilled me with more...

  4. Other Woodwind Repair, Maintenance & Modification
How would I go about taking care of a wood clarinet? I got a great deal on a Selmer Signet Special clarinet on ebay earlier this week. It's in great condition (no chips or cracks, corks and pads look good, and it plays with very little effort), but I'm still going to take it to my tech as I...
  5. Sax Repair, Maintenance and Modification
Hey everybody. I recently acquired a Holton Collegiate alto from the good old eBay and guess what: It's disgustingly filthy and musty. I haven't found a good consensus on how to clean an old lacquer horn, so I was hoping for some advice. After taking off the keys and removing the pads (they're...

Hey ya'll - Thanks in advance for the responses. I've got a silver plated Mark VI tenor that I'd like to polish up. I was planning to take the time and do it on my own. I realize in doing that, I may not be able to reach all of the hard to reach spots and I'm not comfortable taking it apart...
  7. Sax Repair, Maintenance and Modification
Hello all, I was hoping I could get some help regarding my daughters B&S blue label alto sax serial no 1379 (pretty sure it was made before the unification of Germany. We bought it off her previous saxophone teacher and she has been playing it for the last 4 years. About 9 months ago we had a...
  8. Misc. Saxophone Discussion
While I always use a saxophone stand, many fellow sax players don't. I have seen professionals put their horns down on flat surfaces (tables, chairs, and even the bandstand floor). Some put the left side down, some the right. Is there a "safer" way to do this to avoid damaging the horn?

Attempted to install a new vBulletin version. However, it did not finish properly and the upper navigation bar disappeared. Will try to do this again tomorrow. Please excuse the inconvenience meanwhile. regards,
  10. Sax Body and Finish
Hi everyone! I've been playing sax for about 6 or 7 years now and want to upgrade for my 16th birthday in November. I fell in love with the Yamaha has-62iii silver plated, and realized there are some unanswered questions you guys can probably answer. Is this the type of silver that needs lots...
  11. Sax Repair, Maintenance and Modification
Hi guys, I'm just wondering how significant the impact of very very minor leaks is on a horn. The reason I ask is because I've recently had my sax serviced and only about a month later there are some minor leaks appearing. At around the same time I've noticed that low notes are being stuffy and...

  13. Sax Repair, Maintenance and Modification
I feel like my horn needs to constantly be fixed! When I get it back from the repairman, it sounds great, feels great, but maybe a month after that, it feels like there are some leaks in there, extra airiness around the horn. Is this normal? Is there some way I can prevent this? My horn is a...

  16. Misc. Accessories
Hey all, I bought a BG neck swab, and a pull-through for the whole sax. It said they were 'washable'. I thought 'great'. Now the time has come to wash them, but I haven't the foggiest how I would do it. They are made of synthetic suede. The answer may lie in the documentation that came with...
