Hi everyone, I saw this listing on Ebay for a 1947 (?) TH&C tenor today. It looks OK except it has this strange and very ugly wire guard on the bottom bell side that I have never seen before (see photo #5). Did the TH&C come with this? I don't think so? Is this an add on? Why would anybody...
  2. Sax Repair, Maintenance and Modification
I have repadded a 1952 Aristocrat Tenor Series III. I have gotten most of the upper and lower stack to play. I am able to play C in all registers, but can't get C# to sound. It has been a long road to get here (with a steep learning curve). I took the horn apart, cleaned, took out dents...
  3. Sax vs. Sax, Mpc vs. Mpc, etc.
This has been my question for many years now and I know it all comes down to what I like best in the end but what are some pro's and conn's (haha) of these baris and which sound quality on these do you like better? I know Carney and Mulligan played Conns and Pepper played the Mark VI, but who...

Hi everyone, I am restoring a silver-plated TT Alto I bought from Ebay. It was missing the part pictured below. I filed and made the little square, but I need to get the part below. It can be in brass and not silver plated. Any help or info on how to get it will be greatly appreciated.
  5. What to Buy & Why: Saxophones
I promise I'm going to keep this short and sweet, or at least I'll try. In 8th grade, I finally convinced my dad to let me join band. I had been begging for him to allow it since I first started middle school, but my short lived attempts with the guitar and violin had made him wary. When he...

I'm a bit confused, but think experts here will have an answer. Based on the serial number (49XXX) this is a series II according to SaxPics, although it says the top serial for a 1a is 30XXX, but very approximate. OK, say this is a 1a, SaxPics states these have G# Pearl button and straight tone...
  7. Advice on Buying or Selling a Saxophone
Is $475 a good deal for a beuscher aristocrat? Also would it be a good fit for me? I play a lot of bebop jazz and I tend to have a pretty big tone. I would ideally like to take it to college with me and have it be my tenor for the rest of my life. Is this a professional horn?
  8. Advice on Buying or Selling a Saxophone
I'm new to the forum and i'm hoping to make a vintage Buescher purchase. I have been looking at these two Alto's on ebay. 1 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Buescher-True-Tone-Alto-Saxophone-Vintage-Instrument-/190566061203?pt=UK_Woodwind_Instruments&hash=item2c5e9f5493#ht_698wt_1139 I'm very wary...
  9. Sax Repair, Maintenance and Modification
By no means am I technically inept. Currently I am able to make minor adjustment to my horns but I am look for a small project. I play bari and I am really into the fat sound that the older horns make, epically the American ones. I am not able to take on a huge project nor do I have a large...
  10. Cases
Does anybody have experience in fiberglassing a wooden sax case? I know, I know, the advice is burn it and get a modern case. http://www.emoticonzone.com/msn-emot...ted/tsktsk.gif I am in the process of rebuilding an old Buescher Tenor case. I will fiberglass it to give it but have one big...
  11. Advice on Buying or Selling a Saxophone
So a friend of mine is trying to get rid of a Buescher true tone alto, he offered to sell it to me for $200. I want it, but it's crappy, took it into the local music shop, estimated $600 for a full repair. I was also saving money for a YAS-62 to buy probably some time next year. So just...

I have observed that True-Tone and Aristocrat baritones had a "wire"-style key guard for the low B natural, which makes sense seeing as the key is on the left side of the instrument. However, I have never seen a Big B baritone with key guards, nor do I believe they ever had them. My question...

Fantastic song by some of Cuba's greatest musical legends down in Santa Clara, Cuba. Check out the opening scene of the Buescher Top Hot & Cane alto and then listen to her sing throughout the song: http://youtu.be/rqyWYpFguSo

Hey guys, I recently bought what I think is a Buescher Big Bell tenor Saxophone. It's serial number is in the 314,XXX range. I only paid $200 for it but, it needs some work. I think it has some leaks in the right hand keys and low B and Bb as well. The laquer is pretty good but a good amount is...

Why did I buy that Big B? It sounds exactly like my TT. Don't talk about the keys & built etc. To my untrained ear, there is no tone difference at all (when I use the same neck & mpc for both horns). My TT is 210,xxx and my BigB is 310,xxx. I have been using the TT for a few years.

Hello Folks, Am looking to part with my TH&C original lacquer alto, with 97% lacquer intact. It needs adjustments with almost all gold Nortons, except for 2 steel springs. No dents and straight as a rod. Has the silver Buescher 400 lettering on the bell and the reinforcement ring below the...

Hi everybody, I got my TrueTone 208XXX and it will be coming within the next week or so. Does anybody have any tips and tricks when playing this horn like different fingering tricks etc.? This is my first vintage and I'm worried :( Thanks everyone!

Hey all. I picked up a True Tone Tenor on ebay and it arrived today. It wasn't quite in the condition that the seller described. The serial is 113xxx. The body itself is in great shape, but the action is floppy as heck. Some of the keys are bent a little bit, somebody did a DIY job on a pad...
  20. Misc. Saxophone Discussion
OK, did such a good job buying a YAS-61 today I though I would see if my luck held out. First, I know just about nothing about saxes, but I did know that the YAS-61 was at least a semi-pro sax, and at $250 was a bargain if in decent condition. Now for this sax. Advertised locally as a curved...
