I have a son who is starting to play the alto sax after playing the clarinet for 4 years. He has a Yamaha YAS-62 and was wondering what you would recommend as an upgrade for the standard mouthpiece that came with the Yamaha YAS-62. Thanks

Vince: I don't think there is an answer to your question. Oh, a lot of posters will list their favorite piece, but each player's embouchure is different. If at all possible, take your son to a store with a selection of various pieces, invest in a variety of reeds (various strengths), and let him start testing the pieces. He will most likely find one that fits his own personal embouchure. Good luck. DAVE

Right Dave.
A very important factor would be the kind of sound your son is going for. There are some very good pieces that gives a dark sound, let's say a Soloist, and some pretty bright and edgy like a Dukoff.
If your son is just starting to play, a mouthpiece with a medium opening and facing would be good. Perhaps a Meyer 5M. Every alto player has one of those in their drawer I bet.

Oops... I wasn't suppose to suggest a mouthpiece, sorry.

Vince: You are welcome. Please let us know how the quest turned out, where you went, kind of variety in mouthpieces you found, etc. DAVE
