Default new Tenor, Conn-selmer VS selmer

hey guys!
i have been playing the alto for a while now and i am looking for a tenor that is good enough quality.

i have two choises for the moment:
a brand new Vinbach prelude conn-selmer TS700 or a 2nd hand Selmer 'aristocrat' TS600?
the conn-selmer in a little cheaper than the 2nd hand selmer. but in this situation, price isn't that important.
what would be the better choice?

I would suggest an "Other Brand" professional model Taiwanese horn. Conn-Selmers &/or their parts are made in the same Taiwanese factories as some other less-well-known brands.

The difference is that the Selmers are, in this case, the student model from the aforementioned factories, while other brands will offer the same factory's pro model at a similar price.

To put it simply: You will waste money buying any Selmer unless it is French!

You can do much much better than either of these. How much do you have to spend? And what kind of music do you play now and what are your future plans?

Give us more details and I'll bet somebody here can help.

i play mainly jazz with a band, but i like trying different styles.
i also live in a country where availibility isnt that great, but i have family in france that come by very often so they could bring one from there.

my price range is about R11000 so about 1450$
i have been playing with a alto blessing which has been serving me good but i have always wanted to play with a tenor and finally want to give it a try, so i am not looking for a proffessional one but not a begginer one neither.

For $1450 USD, you could possibly get a used Yamaha pro model YAS62. Or you could get any number of good professional model shop-branded horns from the US. Though the shipping costs might be an issue depending on where you live.

If you speak French, look at this thread about the Walstein saxophones. These are reported to be very good and can possibly be bought new in France. Check with SOTW member, Pete Thomas, and he can tell you more about them.

And here’s a link that shows the Walstein altos.

Knowing what little I do know about the European market, I would consider either a used Yamaha pro-model or a new Wastein pro-model.

thanks a lot for the help man!

so you are suggesting that the bauhaus welstein tenor would be a better deal than the conn-selmer? it is a little weird as the welstein is near half the price of the conn-selmer...

This is what some well-respected European members here on SOTW believe. Again, I encourage you to contact (PM) SOTW member, Pete Thomas. He can tell you all about the Bauhaus Walstein saxes.
