Re: Orpheo Signature Series
I'm glad you find the horn so good. I actually posted something about my experience with the horn in another area. Evidently your intonation...or ability to deal with it is better than mine. I loved the sound of the horn but couldn't deal with intonation from C3 on up.

Re: Orpheo Signature Series
My Orpheo Signature bari should be here in a day or two. Hopefully, I'll like it. I've been told that the SG bari, which appears to be the same horn, except for the Roo pads and Noyeks, is a real player. We'll see.

Re: Orpheo Signature Series
I have to laugh when I see Steve Goodsen called a reliable source. I would believe Jerry from Noteworthy over Steve any day. Steve has had some good ideas, but I think that is where the good in Goodsen stops.....

Re: Orpheo Signature Series
I bought one of these very lightly used for a whopping $212 -- I'd call this horn MINTY, it had fingerprints on it and that's about all. Any idea where these (just plain "Orpheo", no "signature", no "custom") are made?
It needed three pads re-floated and two timing adjustments, but this horn is for real. It is absolutely an adequate backup gigging horn. The keywork looks kinda fragile, as it is much lighter in construction than any other horn in my collection, but it has held an adjustment through probably 10 hours of playing (over four days) thus far. As far as sound and response go, it is almost identical to the Jupiter 767 it will be backing up. Even the altissimo and intonation quirks are the same. It's a bright horn, but so is the Jupe. A close inspection reveals they're not modeled off the same horn, and they have different neck angles. The Orpheo neck is shorter and the body longer, while the Jupe has an afterthought of a high F# cut right through the tenon (long neck, short body). It doesn't matter much, I don't use it on either horn, but more importantly, this construction difference seems to make no difference at all.
If this horn is Taiwanese, I'd have to say they built them just as good (or slightly better) 20 years ago -- but they sure have gotten cheaper! If it's Chinese, the Taiwanese have every reason to be scared.

Re: Orpheo Signature Series
Joe, let me hear if you hear. Morry got his horn, and it looked good, but was unplayable due to massive adjustment needed. I don:t know if he got it straightened out, or sent it back. He was pretty bummed, as could be expected.
On the flip side, like you, I LOVE my SG version.
I haven't touched my JK bari in a couple of months.

Re: Orpheo Signature Series
Does anybody know what happened to Noteworthy on ebay. I was ready to place an order/bid on the copper orpheo alto and they are gone! I guess I was a day late and a dollar short.

Re: Orpheo Signature Series
Perhaps they weren't getting enough sales to justify the cost? That's a shame if so....

Re: Orpheo Signature Series
I have noticed on occasion in the past they will pull all sales and repost in several weeks.
You can also call and ask about the horn you are interested in.

It turned out not to be a big deal. The upper stack was out of adjustment and needed some tweaking, but the low end was being hampered by one of those black rubber spacers used for shipping. It had become dislodged and stuck between a chimney and keycup. Couldn't see it because it was black and the horn is all black. Tech found and got it playing. I haven't picked it up yet. Told him just to mess with it in his spare time. He said it's playing fine, and I'll probably get it from him this week. Glad it turned out to be nothing. Now just to find some playing opportunities to justify it.

Re: Orpheo Signature Series
Great news Morry! I am really interested to hear how you like yours after you get it back.
The more I play mine, the more I love it.....really a superb horn.

Re: Orpheo Signature Series
My tech friend still has it. He wasn't satisfied with it, so he's tearing it way down and making it right. He's a very fine bari player, and is going over it like it was his personal horn. Looking forward to it.
