Kessler Custom "Short Shank" thumbs up!!
Hi,
I got myself a Kessler Custom "Short Shank" (NYSS) and upon arrival playtested it immediatly.
Now after two days of practicing with it I must say that it is the best MP I ever played. I spent half a fortune on my long search for THE mouthpiece and among the one I had are names like Dukoff, Meyer, Rousseau, Selmer, Lawton, Lakey and others. I guess some of them will go soon en Ebay in Switzerland.
Lately I played a lot with the Rousseau in Big Bands and Soul/Funk bands.
Now with the NYSS it is like one step up. It has rich overtones and my highnotes come out of the horn as I like it.
My main horn is a Selmer Mark VI and it sounds great, full and jazzy!
I tested the MP on my Conn M6 VIII and on the early King Super 20.
On both horns I got a much richer sound than before. Specially on the Super 20 in the way that it rivals now the MK VI as my main horn.
I recommend if you are looking for a great MP to give Dave a call. He is a supporter of this forum and can be reached via his homepage http://www.kesslermusic.com.
Just let me add that I am in no ways sponsored by Dave or any other company but I wanted to let you know that there are still folks out there who understand their craftsmanship.
Regards
Werner

He offered me the NYSS to tryout with my new alto too, and after reading this comment, I can't wait 'til it arrive (should be here by tomorrow, but i want it NOW!). Yes Dave is helpful, resourceful and we can reach him easily. I'll post my comment when I receive it.

I wanna add my voice to the chorus of praise for the Kessler NYSS alto mouthpiece. Recently bought one secondhand from another SOTW member. Been trying it out on my Couf Superba II alto with an Optimum lig and various reeds including Daniel's, Fibracell, Java, V16, and Rico.
For me the NYSS has a lyrical voice that rings right out in the palm keys. Tone is sweet, with a beboppish dryness that makes it flip and hip. Suddenly I'm coming out with this West Coast Cool School sound, sorta Desmond, sorta Zoot. I like the piece a lot. It blows easily and is really quite special.

I just ordered one of these from Dave myself. What reed strength do you recommend?

For me, a 2.5 blows a bit more easily on the Kessler NYSS, with a sound more like a normal Meyer. With a harder reed, like a 3, I get more of the puffy, high sound that one associates with Desmond.
But that's just me, and reeds vary. You'll need to experiment. Enjoy.

Thanks SopSax! I'll have my new mouthpiece and sax tomorrow, and will definitely give it a workout!
