Folks, I've been ruminating on a great American gift to popular music the AABA format (two more or less identical 8 bar segments, followed by a release into a new 8 bar them and then back to the original).

In particular I've been musing on the way the B section (bridge, channel, middle 8 etc) works. Usually, it dips away from the tonality of the piece and then resolves back to it. There are exceptions, but a common methodology for bridges is to use a cycle of 5ths to get back to the right key (think of I Got Rhythm).

But what I've become interested in are those tunes which stray a long way from the original key and then cleverly resolve back, often with some deft chords or some chromatic changes. Probably the most famous, at least in jazz terms, would be Body and Soul.

I want to make a collection of these "standards" so I'll start with a few and welcome others. Here are 4 that all have the same jump, a key change from I to III (like Eb to G):
'Swonderful
Once In A While
Polkadots And Moonbeams
You're Driving Me Crazy

Got some others?

Hello all,

Well, after a long time of debating and such, I have finally mustered up the courage to post my interest in tracking down one of these bad boys (technically, bad girls ;) )

I'm looking for a player, not a minty 1942 Silverplated closet queen that would cost upwards of $2500-$3500 and I would be too scared to hold knowing its so nice. My goal is to get a Tenor that will do me well for as long as I ever want it to, and trust me, I plan for that to be a VERY VERY long time.

Now, I am well aware that the Conns that have Rolled Tone Holes seem to have a better rep than their non RTH brethren, so I would prefer tracking down one of those, but if the right non-RTH pops up, then end of thread. :)

I plan on bumping this thread until I am a proud owner of a "Naked Lady" tenor, so if you see this thread now, and I don't have a big "THANK YOU _____" at the bottom of it, keep me in mind if you ever come across something.

Thanks in Advance,

Andrew

Concert, jazz, woodwind choir, district honors jazz band and heck I even marched it one year. I used a Yamaha 5C mouthpiece which I quickly out grew. I could NEVER get volume out of it. I'm not making this mistake again. I know large tip and chamber make volume but I don't want to be mr. chainsaw either. I'm playing primarily in a community concert band. I was thinking a rubber Otto Link 6* or 7. Any ideas or recommendations?

The sax has 60% of it's laquer left. No major dents. It is complete and with some time setting the pads and a little work on the key timing it will play again. The case is good for shipping and may last some more time depending on how gentle you are with it - the case catches are solid. Its serial number is K619xx.

Give me $75 and pay for the shipping and it is yours. I will pack it well and ship it for the lowest cost possible. Ships from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I can often ship for less to the US than I can to other places in Canada. Expect $50 or less for shipping to most places in the USA.

Played it at home and it sounded good, very good. Comfortable, no discernible "foreign" feel in the mouth, lots of projection AND it played straight out of the package.

Well last night (it's Monday morning here in Oz) I played a three hour classic jazz gig and I have created a monster - ME. I love it. My mates thought I was playing well but it was just because I was loving the sound.

I reckon I'll keep the new box of Ricos that's in my bag, but it might stay there for quite a while. I think I'll get a clarinet reed next. Thanks all you SOTW players who pointed me toward this development.

The Kessler Performance (Student) model has caught my eye, and everything I've read on here seems like they are great.

After having not played the flute for a very long time, I decided to get back into it, but having no flute and very little funds meant resorting to eBay, which I know is a risk but I really had very little options. I did a bit of research and found that Emerson flutes are fairly decent for inexperienced players and I found one and bought it.

However, when I got the flute I've found myself suspicious as to its authenticity, this is because the logo on the barrel is not the neat little machine engraved/stamped one that I have seen on other Emerson flutes, rather it looks hand engraved, and not very well at that, it says ELD in the oval shape, but there is no oval surrounding it, has Emerson USA written on it but it misses out the "Elkhart Indiana" that I have seen on other Emerson flutes and the writing itself, although in the same style is very plain, meaning that it's really just single lines of engraving rather than the fancier sort that is machine engraved/stamped.

I have contacted the seller and she told me that it was bought in the UK about 17 years ago brand new from a reputable seller and as far as she is aware it is authentic but she has assured me if it turns out to be fake then I can return it and she will refund me but I'm at a loss to find out if it is genuine as the model is no longer listed on the Emerson website, I have tried checking the Conn-Selmer site for the serial number but Emerson flutes are not listed and I have searched the internet with absolutely no luck so I was wondering if anyone here could help me out, either if they know about these flutes themselves or can perhaps direct me to a site where I can find out. The serial number is C66570 with a 1 underneath it which I believe, from what I've read, represents that it is a silver plated nickel student model. Has Emerson ever engraved the model/logo on the barrel without the "Elkhart Indiana" inscription and has the engraving ever been done by hand in the style that I have described or are these signs that it's a fake?

Thanks so much for any help!

I've read some German articles/webreviews about fitting Jupiter necks to Selmer sax'es with success. They are supposedly somehow contributing both to sound and intonation.
(Here is one: http://www.saxophon-service.de/online/da980260.htm)
This combination might quite possibly be a Germany only phenomenon.

The Jupiter necks are named: Heavy 1, Heavy 2, Gentle, Funky and Silver.

Does anybody have any experience with these necks on Selmer saxophones? They are cheap, and I would be tempted to by a "copper" one just to test the influence on sound and most importantly: Intonation on my SA80II alto. Do they normally fit more or less ok? I wouldn't adjust the reciever for such a neck. Is adjusting the neck-tenon something every tech can do?
