View Full Version : My sax courses are getting useless

Hi!

I've been playing the sax for 5 years now, and I started taking courses two years ago. My teacher has taught me how to pratice (long tone techniques, how to practice errors, how to play altissimos,...). He's taught me how to improvise and the basics of jazz theory.

Now that I know the basics and that I should be good enough to study music at university, I feel like he has nothing more to show me (which is absurd, I agree). I insist to do more theory because I want to learn more, but I'm a bit tired of doing that. I don't want to pay for a sax course in which I'll just improvise on a few tunes with the teacher aside, saying a few tips from time to time.

BTW, he has a Jazz bachelor degree.

What should I be taught? What does Michael Brecker learn when he takes courses? What kind of course would be useful? What do they teach in university?

Thanks

Time to move on. It happens all the time and it's not a bad thing. before you leave, however, it might be a good time to get honest with your instructor and communicate your needs. Perhaps he could help you define your needs and assist in finding your next instructor. Or, it could be that you are not communicating your goals and he doesn't realize that you're ready for greater challenges.

find someone who actively plays and gigs and learn from them more about the chords and what not, more in depth improv (if thats what you want). otherwise maybe you just dont need a teacher anymore?
i dunno.
