Speak with Stephan Boeskan in Germany, he has access to all sorts of horns from the factory. Stephan Boesken (stephanboesken@t-online.de)

Hey Morry,
Didn't you just buy a Yamaha 875 to replace a YTS-61 you bought a few months ago because the 61 was too bright. Are you going for an SX90R because the 875 is still too bright.
I played an SX90R last week and I really liked the sound and the keywork but the $3500+ pricetag (black nickel was all they had) is too steep for me.
I was going to try a black 875 they were selling for $1995 but they had already sold the only three they had before I got there so I tried the SX just for fun.

Yeah, I've got the 875B here now, and a 62II is coming by brown truck today. The 875B just isn't as "open" sounding as I'd like. Not like the 62 I had before. I'm gonna give the new 62 a blow, and also try the 875B with the G1 neck from the 62. However, I stopped by a local retailer, and he asked "have you ever tried a Keilwerth?". Well, I hadn't, so I tried it and...Man!!! I love that horn. I'm not the greatest player in the world, and continually struggle to develop a "sound". I just love the big, fat, beastly sound from the JK. Like you, though, I'm not sure I can spend the $3000 for it.

If I do, I may sell the 875B instead of sending it back, if someone wants it for the $1999 I spent.

Hi Morry
This is a great buy + on EBAY Black Nickel Tenor with what looks like a BAM case, if I didn't already have one I'd buy it.

Well, I ended up not going for the best price after all. Mathew's in the Netherlands was, by far, the best price at $3000 for a black nickel SX90R tenor. However, I found a gold lacquered model at my favorite old time retailer in town for the same amount. I know Mathew's would have sold me the plain gold lac horn for at least a couple of hundred less, but I like to support my local retailer, and he gives a year free service with it. Still, it was $100 less than USA Horn, so I don't feel too bad. The owner is a great old player from the 40's and 50's that has a killer tone, and he keeps inviting me over to play some duets and work with me for free. I gotta go do that.

On the positive side, I LOVE this horn. I've always played Yamahas, but the intonation on this SX90R is much, much better for me. I tried all my mpcs and ended up loving my Ponzol II-V-I .100 best of all. This horn really has balls, and I think I'll be looking for a JK bari down the road. One thing though...this mutha is heavy!

Morry,
Congrats! You are going to L-O-V-E the SX90R!
I recently bought a Dark Lacquer over Nickel tenor. :D
I'm currently playing a JJ ESP on mine. RICH sound!

That's the finish I was going to get, but I just fell in love with this plain lacquer model I found locally. I know that they are handmade horns, and I just loved the intonation and solid feel of this one, so I didn't want to take a chance by buying one from overseas. Can you tell any difference in the sound quality with the vintage lacquer and nickel, as compared to plain lacquer?

Morry,
I've never had the opportunity to play the plain gold lacquer.
My current setup is moderately dark.
I just ordered a Guardala Studio, and I'm eager to try it. I assume that the Guardal Studio setup will be moderately bright.

I thought I wanted darker, but since most of my playing is section stuff in R&B/Funk, I kind of like the brighter edge that the plain lacquer seems to have.
