I have come accross a Tenor sax that has a fancy engraving and "Evette" in the center of the engraving. It has a serial number N133169 at the bottom. That is all, no other markings at all. Does anyone know what this is?

This is not easy to answer. Modern Evettes are Chinese made "student" horns of low quality. There are some Italian horns labeled Evette that seem to be also of low quality, manufactured in the 70s and 80s. Then there are Evette and Evette-Schaeffer horns that were manufactured by the Buffet company in France, which are essentially economy versions of their top pro-line instruments (among the best) and are great instruments which can sometimes be had at a reasonable price, manufactured from the 50s through the 80s. These horns are solidly made, of substantial metal, and tend to have a darker sound than most. Then there are the much older, Evette-Schaeffer horns, which are more of historic interest than for most performers. Hope that helps.

And check out the new forum folder called Evette & Schaeffer Buffet-Crampon, S.A. at http://saxontheweb.myforums.net/viewforum.php?f=5.

Hi LeonS,

I have found a very similar sax with the same sort of markings and an N133*** serial number also. Did you manage to establish the origin of the sax you have described??

Thanks,
