Are all King Super 20 Silversonics altos flat in the lower register?
Has anybody else noticed this?

Thanks

Soniqplayer,

I don't have a Silversonic, but it's close... a Super 20 circa 1964, SN 402XXX, ss neck, brass bell. So it's reasonably close to your horn. To answer your question, my horn definitely has an intonation issue between D1 and D2, D1 being flatter than D2. While I usually can't hear it, a digital tuner makes it very clear. Also my side C is AWFUL, perhaps a quarter tone off (I think it's sharp, but I don't remember for sure). THAT I can easily hear

Mine is definately flatter in the lower register than the higher. Mine's a late one, about '74. I've had it adjusted and it's a lot better than it was, but it still jumps around. I'm in the process of playing overtones, longtones, and trying to train my ear to play in tune. I think some of my problems stem from playing it for so long when it was badly set up that I've sort of lost the concept of playing an 'in-tune' scale.

However, I'm sure some of its the horn, as I can play my teachers Mark VI against the tuner and the needle only quivers.

Could be your choice of mouthpiece is not suited to the horn. What are you using?
