Hello All!!

Great to be part of the group. I hav'nt played sax since my 70's experience at Reseda High School as 2nd tenor in the Jazz Band, Concert Band, Marching Band, Reseda Youth Band etc. I picked it up here and there over the years to play in community bands but I never really mastered the thing. Today, I am very involved in music, singing mostly and have found a renewed commitment in mastering the sax.

I have played around on sopronos and I dig the sound of them, so that will be my first purchase(tenor comes next).

Don't want to spend thousands at this point but I don't want a cheap Asian horn either. I have an opportunity to buy a brand new Grassi Prestige GT4605 in 24k soprano for around $1,000. I am having a hard time finding info. on the web about these horns. Can any one shed some light for me regarding these horns? Are they considered "Pro" horns?

Thanks!!

Grassi flutes and clarinets used to be the most common in NZ a few decades ago.

They stopped making clarinets perhaps 15 or 20 years ago. They were out of tune, had an unorthodox mouthpiece socket diameter, and the key metal was brittle with pockets of slag which made them break very easily. A low quality instrument by today's standards. Although they were timber, current student plastic instruments are far preferable.

The flutes had sever pitting problems in the silver plating. Tuning was not wonderful. Tone holes were often split where they were rolled. For these reasons they gradually died from the local market, and Yamaha largely took over.

There may have been improvements since then, but based on their past, I would suggest that the better current Taiwanese sopranos (Jupiter?) are likely to be better.
