Has anyone tried P. Mauriat saxophones? Tim over at Sax Alley has lots of good things to say about them. Just curious if anyone's been able to try one.

Thanks,
Dave

Yep! I did try the sax several time! Surprisingly, P. Mauriat saxes play very well in tune with a very nice tone quality and superb projection. Especially, the 'Pro Artist' model (the one that looks very much like Selmer's Ref.54).

I played the P.Mauriat tenor sax up aganist my 'Great Three Tenors' that are MKVI, Ref.54 and SIII. The Taiwanese could really fight strongly aganist those French saxes with no disgracing at all!

At the end, the winner is not the P.Mauriat.....until I see its price tag!

I'm planning to get one with custom gold plating!

Summary:

PROS: Made with French brass, sounds as good as (or, even better than)some 'ten time more expensive' brands, excellent intonation and action.

CONS: Ref.54 wannabe look!

I bought a P. Mauriat soprano (around US$1000.00) when I traveled to Taiwan last summer, and this brand really surprised me, the horn really sings !! I used to be a big fan of those pricey Yanagisawa, until I tried P. Mauriat, very good intonation, and have that "ring" sound in it, the key work feels like a US$3000 horn, one thing that i didn't like much was the engraving, i wished they can put more on the bell.
This gentleman that I bought from was actually working at the factory, I spent 4 hours trying all the different "fresh" sopranos and tenors that he is got. Most of them sounded great, but as I said I wished they have more engraving on the bell. :(
Let me know if you want to get one of these, I think I still have the contact information of this guy that I bought from.

I drop my tenor off with Tim at Sax Alley last week and played one of the P Mauriat tenors while I was there. My impression was virtually the same as the Prince's. Although I would add that I also have questions concerning the durability of the keywork as the rods look a little "spindly" to me.
When saxes first started coming out of Asia they were pretty bad now we are starting to see horns that are 90% as good as those from the big 4 for 50% of the cost.
