I have just received from WWBW a Jupiter Artist Series Bari. The problem is it plays a full semi-tone sharp throughout the whole horn. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm going to return it (obviously) but want to know if it is worth exchanging it for another one or move on to a different horn altogether.

Er, if it plays a whole semitone sharp thoughout the entire horn, doesn't that just mean your mouthpiece is on too far?

Maybe I should have mentioned that I have played the horn with 3 different mouthpieces, and all are pulled out to the end of the cork and I've also pulled the neck out as far as I can. It's very frustrating!!

Jupiter horns are not made like some of the japanese or french horns. They're Chinese made, made from an odd type of metal that will evaporate if you get it to saulder temperature.(in otherwords, if it breaks, it's BROKE) they're not made very well either, it's probably a creation flaw by whoever made it.
If you had to pay for it you might wanna get your money back and put towards for a yani or yamaha...
Er, what?

They're made in Taiwan

uh, okay.
Jupiter horns are...made from an odd type of metal... Well, yeah. They're from Budweiser cans. If you turn the bore of a Jupiter inside out, you can see the red and white Bud logos. I thought everybody knew that.
...they're not made very well either..Absolutely true. If a tech tries to solder onto the horn, it melts. It just evaporates before your very eyes.
... If you had to pay for it...That is, as opposed to some guy in a Chinese restaurant taking it off the wall and giving it to you outright.
(Just between you and me Saxylady, the Jupiter Artist tenor iis a very good instrument. I have never played the Bari but if it's made as well as the tenor, and if you can't get the entire instrument to play in tune something is definitely wrong. Don't get mad, but how do you know it's that badly out of tune and how long have you been playing? It's just a question as a starting point. Cheers. Gary)
i have a friend who plays a jupiter artist bari and sounds great on it. from what i have seen, it is a sturdy, dependable horn. the same is true of a jupiter artist alto i have used. most likely the bari you have just has some manufacturing problem or a very severe problem with regulation. go ahead and send it back. it is a perfectly good horn that can sound very good when set up properly, not in the same league as a high end yamaha or yani, but it can hold its own.

I've been using my Jupiter Artist Bari for 4 years now with no problems at all.
We're not talking just casual use either. I've played it on several recording sessions, as well as on concerts. I also use it when I sub on the Toronto production of The Producers.
My first question to the original poster is - are you an experienced bari player? If you've played alto quite a lot, your chops may just be too tight to get the proper m/p pitch on the horn. I'm also curious about what the m/p setups were that you tried.
I just hope that you don't encounter too many problems shipping it back to the U.S. I too use WW&BW for some orders, but I try to stick to Canadian dealers for instruments, to make sure I have after sales service. Trying out the horn at a local dealer could have saved you the shipping expense and hassle.

Thanks for your replies
Merlin, I am an experienced bari player. I have been playing nothing but bari for the past 10 years.
I was hoping to purchase through the local dealer, and was quoted one price (verbally) and I asked them to bring one in for me to try out. It took 8 months for them to get the horn in, and the price went up $1200 in the mean time.
I chose to order the bari through WW&BW because the price my local dealer could offer was roughly $1800 more than the American price after converting to Canadian $'s.
Just today, they called and told me the horn was in. I went in to check it out, and it played like a dream. I had no problems with it at all. I've decided that I will send the horn I have back for an exchange.
well, you might just have received a lemon. It happens. Personally, I'm impressed by the artist series.
I plan on purchasing a bari.....er......sometime, and the Jupiter is definitely on my radar.
