Hey SOTW!
New member here... Played alto and bari all through middle, high school and college, and then life got into the way, and I stopped playing. Recently a new mom to an awesome little girl.
Just had a birthday and my husband bought me a new Tenor saxophone. I haven't played much tenor (played 1 year in jazz band when needed). Its nothing great, but it plays! Looking forward to getting my chops back. I haven't played in about 6 years, and today I got my new horn. I remembered how to play! And I didn't sound too bad!
Love the forum, and very happy to see a place where great sax players can share great information!

Hello folks,
Found this website a few weeks back. Has lots of great information for all levels of players.
As for myself, I have been playing saxophone for about 14 yrs (started in 6th grade and have been playing ever since). I play mainly in a college big band, but have also done some classical band playing as well, although not recently.
My current set up is a Yamaha 62 Tenor with a Link STM metal jazz mpc, but I am getting ready to try out a JJ DV piece soon. In the future I would like to add some horns to my collection, mainly the 3 I don't have .

Hello! I'm Amy and I've been lurking around for about a year. I returned to the sax (tenor) after 8 inexplicable and empty years away from it. I was going to sell it, but came to my senses. I now play in a community concert band and a sax chamber ensemble that varies in size. I am a classical player - jazz has always eluded me but I love to listen to it.
This site has been so helpful during my "rehabilitation" - lots of great info and reminders. I wish it had been around back when I was first starting to play seriously!
Thanks and take care,
Amy

Hi Folks,
I just found this site inadvertantly trying to post a question on behalf of my pre-teen son. I don't play saxophone myself, though I can play guitar and a little bit of keyboards.
Here goes: My boy has been playing trumpet going on three years now, and now he wants to play alto sax. He wants to play both, with the thought of eventually dropping trumpet to concentrate solely on sax. BUT, for the next few years, he will most likely continue to play both. Since he is so young and is still growing, are there any concerns that playing both instruments will cause any damage to his mouth, teeth, lips, lungs, etc? Hopefully this doesn't sound too stupid, but I really am asking this question seriously.
Thanks,
Steve

Hey, I live in Greece, but I am from Canada. Play alto saxophone, Ive been playing for about five years, and Im 17 right now.
^^As for the question above, I actually played trumpet for two years before picking up Saxophone. I dropped trumpet when I started saxophone. As for the question you have, I know Im young and dont have as much experience as some others but I really dont think there will be any problem, I never had any. I even have braces right now :-( and it doesnt affect me at all.

Hi There, I am a born again sax player, after 25 years absence due to family commitments. Perhaps Im a bit past it at 56, but I have always yearned to rekindle my once then passion.
I sold my Selmer Tenor, Beucher artisacrat alto and B+H Emperor clarinet when the kids were small to pay the bills. Sad eh!!
So I Finally decided to buy myself a yam pro 62 tenor and have just upgraded the mouthpiece to otto link 6*. Fantastic!!!
Its my turn now the kids are ok and I am really enjoying the buz. Im a bit rusty but what the heck.
Cheers SOTW for loads of info and bags of inspiration.

Hey SOTW,
My name is Joel Sana and i am a high school senior. I have been playing the Tenor for about 5 years working on my sixth year now. I was always looking for a way to find new riffs and have sax chitchat with people who know a thing or two about blowing on a horn. ^_^
This forum rocks,

Howdy! I am Katie and just started learning tenor this past January. I play piano (badly) and flute, but sax is by far the most fun so far. I was given a 1926 Buescher...plays beautifully. I have a very cool teacher who is in his 70s and has played with a lot of small combos, jazz bands and municipal bands. I look forward to learning from you masters!!

Hi Steve and welcome.
It is probably best to concentrate on one instrument at a time, that said general "musicianship" will develop pretty much regardless of the instrument and there are plenty of people who get more satisfaction (and more gigs) from doubling.
I think an important point for youngsters is maintaining momentum on their musical journey and if that means an occasional switch of instruments then in my book so be it. If he sticks with sax he will surely eventually want to dabble with others of that family, sop, alto, tenor or bari etc.
I doubt there would be any physical limitations with playing both. I played brasswinds in school and can recall my teeth feeling loose after an all day blow of a few occasions, sax never gives me such issues, although 30 years on of course my growing is now long finished (except for around the waist that is).

Hi there happy honkers,
My name's Frank and I live in Belgium. I recently bought (last July) a YAS 62 C and combined it with a Selmer C* mouthpiece.
The only experience I had on sax' before was the Jupiter my son had from the academy. As he stopped his sax lessons we had to return the horn and so I decided to buy the one mentioned above. I'm very pleased with the sound and handling.
I never played sax before and started to practice on my own. Since September I take lessons by a real teacher and wow what a relevation.
My music history before was accordeon and bass guitar. Now I'm already 22 years in a Blues/Blues rock Band and play the mississipi saxophone since.
Finally I decided to get on, on the real thing ;)
Since I bought the mighty horn I practice 1 - 3 hours daily. Could it be I'm addicted?
That's a little about my humble self,
Keep on Honking,
Frank

Hi everyone,
i just discovered this site when i was looking for some sheet music... It looks just awesome!
I live in Belgium and started playing saxophone in september. I played the clarinet for three years when I was a kid, but I stopped playing because I didn't like the teacher much. But then I missed playing music to much and decide to start again, this time with alt sax. The teacher I have now is just great, so I thing i'll be playing a long time
Next to playing sax, I like reading, especially young adult novels. I'm a great fan of Philip Pullman, Aidan Chambers, Floortje Zwigtman and many more... Lucky for me, I work in the childrens department of a public library. I get to be creative and work with children and children's books, which is just great!
I'm looking forward to talk to other sax players and to find greet sheet music...

Hi everybody! I played alto sax all the way through school and then after college for a short time at a church I was attending. I was just beginning the make a transition i had been looking for between playing only from sheet music to playing by ear and making the sax play what I wanted, how I wanted. Life changed and I am just picking up my alto again after 15 years!
I promised myself way back then that if I ever started playing again that I would upgrade to a pro-level sax. All those years I played on a Armstrong student horn. I'm still amazed that my college jazz instructor never made me upgrade. But now it's time and I've started looking. And I'm excited about that! And about playing again! Anybody know of a good saxophone shop in the minneapolis area?

I was on the old forum and have recently come back to shop for a new tenor.
I'm a trumpet player and high school music teacher. I bought an SX90R/Morgan 8M rig back in 2000 in order to connect better with my woodwind students (I ended up playing it more than my trumpet for awhile and even gigged a bit on it!) but had to sell it (along with my flugelhorn and clarinet) when my son became very ill and finances were tight.
Things are better now financially, my son is completely well (soon to join the Marines!), and I'm in the market for another tenor. I can't afford another JK at this point, and even if I could, I'm not sure I want to go back to that unique sound. If all I was going to do is R & B and that sort of thing, I might hunt for a used SX90 (the sound is HUGE) but I think I'm headed more toward a more subtle, intimate approach--a ballads-with-a-quartet kind of vibe.
Another part of my story is a year in band instrument repair school (Western Iowa Tech) and an ever-growing passion for fine craftsmanship of every kind. It will be hard for me to buy a sax with the sound I'm after if the workmanship isn't perfect. I've rebuilt an almost totally destroyed sax and gotten it playing well--leak free, so I know what I'm looking for in terms of build quality. When you've done a complete restoration yourself, even if only as a school project, you look at a sax from a different perspective.
Many people are telling me that the Yanagisawa is the sax with the best craftsmanship. I'm all ears if somebody thinks otherwise because at this point I'm leaning toward a T-991 with a Link or short shank Soloist.

Hello,
I'm a freshman in college, majoring in Music Education. I play sax and a very little bit of flute. I've been lurking here for a little while and I've already learned so much. This forum is definitely one of the most valuable resources for sax players on the 'net. Hopefully one day I'll be able to contribute. :D

Hello, I'm a senior in high school, and thinking of majoring in music (probably music performance, but not sure yet). I've been playing the alto sax for about 6 years and right now I play for my high school wind ensemble and jazz band.
I play on a Selmer and my mouthpiece is a Meyer 5. Yes, basic set. And I'm still looking for the perfect reed, but now I'm sticking with a Vandoren java or a V16.
As a student, I'm hoping that I'll be able to become a better musician by a little help from SOTW :)

Hello everyone.
Just found this great site and thought this might be the right place for me. I used to play for 4 years but then I couldn't find the time to do so and started again about a month ago. Hopefully it will all come back after a couple of months of practice. :)
Have a nice day.

Hi,
I'm also a newcomer to the site (I have browsed it before). Like so many, I returned to playing fairly recently (about 2 yrs ago) after a long dormancy...really 30 yrs or so! Was recruited by sheer luck by a local big band, playing Alto 1, soprano and clarinet...enjoying it immensely. Oddly enough, I never played much swing or jazz, just "classical" style, in which I was trained at university. So this is fun. I play a Mk VI alto, with my original Brillhart mouthpiece (I have a separate one, crafted from a Selmer, for classical) and a cheapo Chinese-made soprano (with a Yamaha mouthpiece worth a lot more than the horn!). If you can control it, the $150 soprano is a true find; I can just about keep it in tune through the range! Recently discovered Vandoren ZZ reeds.
Also playing soprano in a new quartet, which is where I feel most at home.
Looking forward to reading and taking part in this.

Hello!
My name is Bastiaan, I'm 23 years old and I live in Holland, Europe. I've been playing the saxophone for about fifteen years now, mostly alto, but lately I've been sort of collecting saxophones... Sure you know how addicting that is :). Currently filling my room:
- Conn New Wonder I Sopranino from 1926
- SML Rev. D Soprano from 195x
- Selmer SA80II Alto from 2003
- SML Rev. D. Alto from 195x
- Kohlert 57 Tenor from 1957
- Kohlert 58 Tenor (stencil) from 1958 8-)
- SML Rev. D Baritone from 196x
(- Conn Bass Clarinet, about 50 years old)
Hope to learn more about the Kohlerts here, I'll try to repad them myself.
Best regards!

Hello SOTW and fellow saxophoners, :)
My name is Stephanie and I am a high school student. I have been playing alto sax for a little over five years and started really getting into it last summer. I love music and I plan on going to college to study music and make a career with my saxophone.
I often visit this site to find answers to many of my questions and just figured it was about time I joined. This is definitely my favorite place to find answers.
Stay cool my friends,

It is my understanding that flute is a very demanding instrument, and a piccolo flute even more so.
If applicable, keep the piccolo as a reward for achieving a major milestone as flautist.

Hi,
I'm happy to have found SOTW, and have already gained a lot of new knowledge in the brief time since joining. Here's my brief history. I started out in the early 60's playing clarinet, then moved to alto sax around '64 or '65. I played alto throughout middle school and high school, participating in marching, stage, and jazz bands. After HS graduation, my father bought me a tenor. I had intended on playing tenor in the marching band in college, but they wanted an alto player, so I ended up playing alto in marching, pep, and jazzband in college. After college I had a nearly 20 year lapse due to career demands, but got my horns out of storage and started playing again in 1996. These days, I play a Selmer MkVI tenor and favor blues, jazz, funk, and zappa music. I'm a rank amateur, but love playing and listening to all types of music.
Cheers,

Hi Everybody!
According to my profile, I've been a member since Nov. of 07. So, it's been since then that I've been sitting in thew shadows and just taking everything in. I guess it's time to post and introduce myself.
I played through HS and into college. I discovered that I liked music better as a hobby as opposed to trying to make a career out of it. I tucked my horns away for a few years. About two years ago I started practicing again and playing with a little frequency. Now, I'm thinking of actually looking for venues to play - amature, community based stuff, open mic nights, that sort of thing.
Anyways, I'll probably continue to just read and hang out in a quiet way. But if I do speak up, you'll now have a little knowledge of who I am.
Peace,
gregboccuti

Hey,
My introduction and background is a bit long winded, forgive me.
I have been a musician all of my life. Both of my parents hold higher education degrees in music education and performance, so I was fortunate to have quality intense training from a very early age. I started piano, saxophone, flute and voice in elementary school, and picked up the clarinet in high school. Now, my main instrument is the saxophone, although I am extremely proficient with all of my other instruments.
I am currently a senior at Lebanon Valley College, in Annville PA. I will be graduating in May 2009 with two degrees, a BA in Jazz Studies, and a BM in Music Recording Technology. After graduation, I will be moving from central Pennsylvania to New Jersey to pursue dual masters degrees in saxophone performance and music education.
Currently, I work as a recording engineer with a company called Traveling Tracks (Traveling Tracks (http://travelingtracks.com)). We specialize in remote concert recordings, although we offer many other services. I also work as a freelance mixing and mastering enginner. Please feel free to contact me, as I am always looking to take on new projects.
My current set up:
Selmer Series II Alto Saxophone, Brushed Laquer
Selmer C* Hard Rubber Mouthpiece
Vandoran 3 Reeds
Meyer 5 Hard Rubber Mouthpiece
Vandoran Java 3 1/2 Reeds
Yamaha Custom Tenor Saxophone
Otto Link RG .108 Metal Mouthpiece

Just want to drop my "Hello!" in. I just found this site yesterday and I must say that I'm thoroughly impressed with this forum. I played in Junior High, High School and a little in college, but I let other things get in the way. Now 12 years later, I want to pick it back up again. :D
BTW, I'm located in Central Arkansas and looking for a good sax technician if anyone knows of one.

Hi,
I have a Noblet tenor sax that my oldest son played 8 years ago. I want to sell the thing, since it has simply been collecting dust in the closet, but my husband doesn't want me to sell it because one of our younger kids may want to play, later. He says saxaphones are expensive and we shouldn't have to invest in another. I can't really find the info I need on this particular sax to make the best decision. Can someone, anyone, help me?
Thanks,

Howdy. I'm an old lady from Texas. My horn is an RMC Martin Indiana S/N # 855xx purchased new in 1961 or 1962. I have the original Martin mouthpiece and also a 4m medium chamber lapped facing Meyer New York mouthpiece purchased at the same time as the horn. Both have been sitting in the original RMC Samsonite case in my closet since I quit playing in 1970. It's time to downsize. I'm looking for recommendations for the best place to sell either or both. I'd appreciate any advice anyone can offer. Thanks.

Hi!
Clearly I'm new here, as I'm posting here =) so here's a little bit about me:
My name's Spencer, I'm 13 and I'm in 8th grade. Obviously I play the saxophone. And obviously I like it =P but the main reason I joined SOTW was because I'm looking around for a better horn. I've got a Zenith student alto... if you even know what that is =P
Anyway, my lessons teacher is telling me to look around for a lightly used Cannonball... a pro model =) so I'm kind of excited.

Hello all, nooobie here: joined yesterday -already made a couple of posts, but hadn0t noticed this 'introduction' thread until now (doh!)...
My name's Chris (Christopher).. 45 years young XD, originally from London, but living in Madrid. I am (and have been) a professional guitarist for 25+ years now, practically non-stop gigging/touring for the past 10 years. Finally, I'm on a 'break' for 6 months.
Last week, I was on an errand to buy a clarinet for my youngest daughter (starts learning this week) and originally my daughter wanted me to get a clarinet also (to learn together)... but the seller only had one 'student' clarinet at a reasonable price (the other clarinets available were 1000€uros (+/-US$1350). I mentioned that I had always fancied learning a saxophone (I didn't mind either a soprano, alto or tenor).. and the seller had an 'old beater' for a more than reasonable price (100€uros). It's a Chinese made 'Startone SAS-75'.. made in 2006 (the seller originally sold it, and then took it back on part-exchange for a better model)... I know there's a lot of criticism about Chinese made instruments - especially the 'cheap' ones.. but when the seller demonstrated it I thought "If he can make it sound that good, then there's no reason why I can't - with lessons and a bit of commitment!".
Actually, when the seller played my sax, he used his own mouthpiece (A 'Selmer' - don't know which model or size reed). He said the one that comes with the sax is a Yamaha 4C copy (he showed me a 'real' 4C and the only difference I could tell was that the 'real' one had the Yamaha logo on it) and will be good enough for me to learn and get used to the basics.
I've already spent a good few hours reading vairous posts on SOTW and all I can say is 'thank heaven for internet, the WWW and places like SOTW'
You're never too old to learn!!!!!!

Hello,
A new beginner here. I learned to play sax over 20 years ago but after the first 4 years I stop playing (long story) and went on a hiatus of way too many years during which I learned to play a bit of guitar and bass (even some keyboard). In the last 10 years I may have picked my poor sax probably less than 10 times... Lately I finally feel the urge to return to my first instrument, an old YAS-23 with a Selmer S80 C**, courtesy of a Jazz history show I watched that sparks something deep within...
While looking for a "cheap" way to change the sound of my sax I started to look at mouthpieces and while searching for reviews I happend on this site :)
Very happy I did, since I was a teen last time I played sax seriously and the web did not exist back then... Already learned alot tonight and looking for more!
Looking forward to exchange with you!

Heya,
Im 17 and have been playing sax for about 6 years properly now, about to take my Grade 8. Been playing a Yamaha 275 till yesterday when I (finally!) ordered a Keilwerth SX90R "Edition 20 Years" with silver plated Dave Guardala King mouthpiece. Best sax setup Ive ever played!
Found this forum while searching for hard cases which will actually fit the Keilworths. They seem elusive..

Kia ora,
greetings from the South Pacific, one forgets, living on a couple of islands, how many sax players there are. What a brilliant site!
I was born in Germany and live in NZ since 1985. I studied classical music, did my masters in Environmental Science but always have been into jazz and funk. Go figure! After 10 years of absence from the music scene I am back, currently playing a Selmer Ref 54 Flamingo Alto and loving it.
Reading through some of the new intros I am surprised by the number of reborn saxplayers, well here is another one.
All the best

Good to be a part of an International community of great sax enthusiast.
I´m a wannabe sax player on my fifties and a big fan of Martin. I own 3 beautifull saxes and hope that one day my playing skills will match the quality of my equipment. Remainds to be seeing!
My first sax was standard yamaha which I sold pretty soon and bought a new selmer. Now, after owning it for 15 years, I sold it and bought a vintage "The Martin" silvercoated tenor and haven´t regretted it!
I love the idea that these vintage instruments have a soul of their own and a long rugged life behind them. I´m sure, even the instruments can not speak, they will put a part of their soul into my limited playing...
Let´s talk to you soon!
Jazz till´you pass.

Hello all, I realized I might have made a faux pas posting in another thread before introducing myself here. Sorry!
I joined in Dec 2007, but have been lurking until recently, when I couldn't resist posting about my Conn Tranny alto from 1933.
I'm in my 40s, a classically trained pianist, currently working in Rome, Italy as an I.T. Administrator, although my training is as a civil engineer. Go figure.
I started playing the sax when I was living in Manila, Philippines, in the early 1990s, and the first instrument that I played, for a period of almost 9 months, belonged to a friend who very generously showed me the basics. It was an old sax of which he was quite protective, although he always lent it to me when I wanted to play.
I thought I sounded quite good, even as a beginner, but decided that I needed a "modern" sax, so I eventually got myself a Yamaha YAS23, with which I was never quite satisfied. Now the kick is, I now realize that the "old' instrument I played, after looking anew at some photos of myself with it, was a Conn New Wonder II, which as all Conn enthusiasts know, is one of the all-time greats!
I eventually moved on to a Yamaha YAS62 bought used, then a Selmer SBA which I bought at a very good price frmm a good friend who was a pro. The Selmer remained my main horn for quite a few years, and for a short time I actually played semi-professionally in a quartet, where we would perform at weddings, high school reunions, etc.
As fate would have it, about 2 years ago I played a Conn 6M from 1941 belonging to a friend who had 8 Conns of various ages. To say I was bowled over is to put it mildly. I'm a huge Parker fan, and how cool would it be to own a horn of a type he played? I finally got myself a Tranny from 1933, serial 257xxx, nothing special, quite beat up, but with a sound and flexibility that is out of this world. It seems to like any mouthpiece, any reed, any ligature (except the Rovner dark), which seems to be at odds with what I read here about the old Conns liking a certain type of round bore mpc like the Meyers.
In short, I'm a totally conn-vinced and conn-tented conn-vert, pardon the puns.
There remains one problem: my GAS has hit an all-time high, and I'm constantly itching after a New Wonder II. And a 26M. Even a 28M. I play the piano once a week just to keep my fingers flexible, but I don't look hungrily at pictures of Steinways and Bechsteins. I play the Tranny almost every day, and I trawl the internet all the time looking lustfully at photos of Naked Ladies within pentagons. Will it never end?
To close, I've since sold the Yamaha, and am hanging on the SBA only because it's worth so much!

Hey Everyone,
It's good to find people of like mind. I started playing alto when I was 9 and played until I was about 23 then life kicked me in the head and I had to put it down. Last year my wife made me buy a horn cause she was tired of me not playing (the music brought us together in the first place). I found a gorgeous 1935ish Conn 10M Naked Lady tenor and I have playing ever since. Because of my playing (obsession?), both my 8 year old son and my 14 year old daughter play the sax as well. I also have a nice little alto that I play from time to time.
I am now 34 years old and an IT professional during the day but a jazz nut musician by night. Just a little more practice and I will be ready to start playing gigs again (already have 2 lined up)...8-)

Hi All..
Played clarinet back in the 60's from 5th grade to tenth grade....
never touched a horn again untill 1999 when my son started playing my clarinet in 7th grade. I bought another one so we could practice together. It worked out OK for a while...
Then the Maddness started.... My new Wife asked if I could play a saxophone, and so I found an alto and started playing it.... That led to a tenor, another tenor, another alto, and on and on...
Turns in to a obsession...
Anyway, I am just an amature musician. our comunity has a local open mike jam session that is usually fun to play in... play mostly by ear but I can and do read music too. I like to do a little of everthing,
For those that can not find people to play with (Music YOU like) there are two computer programs, BAND-IN-A-BOX and even better NOTEWORTHY COMPOSER. There are VAST Quantities of MIDI files on the Web, and you can find mos any type of music you like...

Hello to all.
I'm 19, I'm a music education/jazz studies major at University of Connecticut.
I started on alto, but switched to tenor and doubt I'll ever go back. I recently started playing soprano as well, and I'm loving it.
I also play a fair amount of bass, but that's not really relevant to this forum, so you'll never hear me bring it up again ;)
My setup at the moment:
Tenor: Yamaha 82Z, Metal Link 6*, Fibracell mediums
Soprano Yamaha yss-475, Yamaha 4C(looking for something better), Rico Royal 2.5's

Hi, I have been looking at this site for quite a while, I learned alot of things from it about the saxophone, but I never really got around to posting. I'm 14 and I really like the saxophone, I hope to take it through college and learn alot about woodwind instruments. I play a 1970's Mark VI alto that I bought over the summer, my teacher hooked me up with a guy that was selling one, I love it. Well I hope that I will help and be helped on this awesome website full of knowledgable saxophonists.

Hey Everyone!
I'm not really a new member but I never did get around to posting an introduction here since I have only used this site sporadically (to ask {no doubt stupid} questions). So...Hi! My name is Lukas, I'm living in Northeren California after graduating from college a few years back. I'm trying to make that transition from student to professional player -also looking at graduate jazz studies programs currently. Anyhow, if anyone would like to hear a bit of my playing you can check it out at

Feedback is welcome, as long as you are at least somewhat constructive about it!

Hello there everyone!
I am a new member from the UK who is finally coming back to the sax fold after ten years in the wilderness. I was so happy to find this forum, what with all it's enthusiastic and geniunely useful info and support. It's great to know that there are so many others who are returning after a saxless period. I used to play classical and jazz tenor in orchestras and jazz bands but always rented my instrument. I'm looking forward to buying my first horn and receiving some useful advice from everyone.
Should be good fun getting into it again.

Heya all!
It's Eng Kwang here--I'm a sax player from Singapore, and I've been playing the horn on and off for about 4 years in school now. SOTW has been a rich well of inspiration, wisdom, practical advice and even humour since I started mucking around on the Web for saxophone instruction (I didn't have a professional teacher). Congrats to SOTW turning 10!
It's surprising to see that SOTW has grown to become such a huge network of saxies--and I'm sure it'll keep on growing!

Hi, I'm Lydia and I'm yet another returning sax player! I'm from the north of England and I played alto and tenor before settling on soprano as my main instrument. Actually, I started out on clarinet first because I was too small to hold a saxophone :) I was pretty good in high school, but then totally neglected it for 4 years during my undergrad...Now I'm rediscovering why I loved it so much in the first place and it's great to find a forum like this to keep me inspired! I mostly play classical soprano (I have a Buffet S1 no. 33xxx), with a bit of alto on the side (some random Yamaha student model).

hey guys, I'm josh, alto saxophone player from the UK with a big passion for all kinds of music from heavy metal to classical and jazz. I'm 18, just started proper jazz lessons after years of classical teaching (which got me a distinction in my grade 8 last term) whilst secretly jamming with playalongs in my bedroom instead of practising scales. I'm here in search of inspiration and knowledge from all the brilliant players on here, and hopefully to try and overcome the "wall" I feel i've hit in my improvisation...

I started playing a tenor sax in my high school music class and later for the school band. The first sax I owned was a student model Conn tenor.
Eventually I started playing with rock bands and paid my way through university playing gigs. As well, I did some touring, recording and TV work. And I also played some gigs with well-known bands like Junior Walker and the All-Stars, which gave me some up-close experience playing with really good sax players.
Some time after I started my first career job, I took a break from playing, and other demands and interests in my life soon took over, and I just never went back to playing in bands.
I still have the second horn that I bought new - a '67 pearled King Super-20 SilverSonic tenor, with a Berg Larson 120/0 mouthpiece. However, since I stopped, I just play by myself a few times a year.

Hello saxophonists ! 'new member but long-time follower of this excellent site. I'm a semi-pro player, active on the New England scene, and sales rep. for P.Mauriat saxophones for that geography + Canada. I have seen many SOTW posts inquiring where the Mauriat horns are sold in Canada - you can try them/buy them at Long & McQuade stores (now stocked in Toronto) or in Archambault stores in Montreal and Quebec. Long & McQuade can also get them for you in the other Provinces. Other PMauriat sax dealers I work with in New England are Rayburn in Boston, Roberts in RI, Northern Kingdom Music in Maine, and Sam Ash in New Haven, CT. I'll be adding new P.Mauriat dealers in NH and probably VT in Fall 2008. Why not stop into one of these dealers and give these fine horns a try? 'hit me up with any questions or comments. Thanks ! - Doug -

Greetings,
My name is Eric Grovum I play mostly classical now, but came up mainly on Jazz. Trane was my hero. Then Joe Henderson took over that job. I also love Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Charlie Parker, Sidney Bechet, Charles McPherson, Eric Dolphy and many others. After losing my connection to the saxophone for a number of years, I experimented with visual arts, piano and banjo playing. I am now playing again. My greatest loves now are Mozart and Bach as well as other classical composers and performers. I love listening to musicians who demonstrate, through their playing, a connection to divinity. For me, personal growth comes from destroying my own paradigms. I am always trying to unlearn what I have learned so I can see things from different perspectives.
Thanks for the forum. It is an excellent resource.

hi yall. :D
i never formally introduced myself. (has it been a year now, no?). but, yea.
im 16, currently a junior at a high school in california. (their band program is, well, accpetable at the best. :doubt: ) i have been playing saxophone for 8+ years now, starting with the bundy. (then to my bueshcer, (which needs repairs, budget permitting,) then to my yamaha. ) i just played as if it was nothin until a year ago, when the mediocrity of my band & marching band just suddenly touched a nerve, thus starting a fiery passion for the art of saxophone. Even though i quit band for this semester (it was just too much for me....so i decided to take a break), i still play my saxophone just about everyday. (i am obsessed with breaking the 4.1 gpa & tennis as of now 8-))
i like music that is, well, good.
my furture aspirations include:
-playing a soprano sax. (the sound is really seductive to me...)
-become an awesome saxophone player. (ya, i'll play saxophone as a side thing
in college. Hopefully, i can get placed into a jazz program....)
-try a philtone meyer. :D
-and soo on.....
as of now, i grade my playability skills as, well, very amatuer at best.
other hobbies include: tennis, book-reading, artwork, table tennis, etc...
equipment history:
started with a bundy. about two years ago, one of my dad's freinds gave me his buescher aristocrat series I. (i cannot forget about my dad's freind ever since.)
then, after months of mosh, i moved to a brand new yamaha yas62ii.
mouthpieces: i started with this unnamed mpc that came with my bundy. moved to a brilhart ebolin 4. then acquired an unnamed mpc and the buescher tt mpc with my buecher. then bought a used S80 C*, then a selmer ss E, then a beechler bellite 7 used, and so on......
i have a selmer paris soloist style coming in through a mail...
yep. life is hard. make the most fun out of it. :D

Hi there.
Thanks for SOTW. theres loads of info out there to help.
Just rediscovered the tenor big time. Its been 20 years since I learnt at school on a fairly mediocre boosey hawkes.
In the summer i treated myself to a yamaha 475 which i have instantly taken to. The house is getting messy but no one seems to mind. In fact my daughter who is 8 has just taken up the clarinet (she wants to play sax too) and my partner has just bought me an otto link bell metal 7* mp for my birthday. I'm coping with it pretty well as long as I use a soft reed. My daughter wrekons it sounds more like a sax now!

Hello SOTW!
I think I was a member of this site before but for the life of me I cannot figure out what my name/pass was, or the email address I registered with so I am starting fresh (or maybe I only lurked forums before?)
I am a young classical musician. While saxophone was my "main" instrument most of my life I have recently converted to being an oboist/doubler. I studied saxophone originally with Debra Richtmeyer at the University of Illinois where I picked up my bachelor's in saxophone performance (and also added a second degree in clarinet).
I am hoping to still stay somewhat active in the classical saxophone world even though my days usually revolve around making oboe reeds and orchestra excerpts.
If anyone has any questions about doubling feel free to contact me. While flute/bassoon are the only instruments I don't hold a formal degree in I am pretty knowledgeable about them too!

Hello Everyone @ SOTW,
I have been lurking here for a while ~ doing some research, and decided to register yesterday.
This is an amazing site for information!
A little bit about me:
I started playing clarinet in elementary school, then switched to alto sax in high school. I played in regular and jazz band, even a local Legion Band for a while. The reason for the switch was when my grandfather handed down his Buescher True Tone alto to me. I remember thinking this sax wasn't as pretty as all of the new ones in the band...as it wasn't shiny ~ If I knew then...what I know now...
Well - forward to about 30 years of real life later (kids grown, career settled..etc) I have pulled this sax back out of the closet. My original thoughts were to *gasp* display the sax with a picture of my grandfather playing it (as this was always something my mom had talked about). So out it comes... hmmm I wanted to play it as soon as it was out...but, I didn't feel like blowing into some 30 year old reeds - so I picked up some reeds...Well to make a long story short(er). No way now am I going to frame this and stick it on a wall. So off I go to a local, recommended tech ~ Leak tests etc confirm that I should get all of the pads, cork, felt, replaced and he recommended straightening a few tone holes as well. Very little concern about play in the keys.
So the sax itself is serial #172xxx,(bought by my grandfather in 1924) still 100% gold plated (burnished) - the look that I didn't like in high school :?
No silver plating showing through anywhere, no dents, no cosmetic issues at all!
And after investing some $$$ I am convinced it will sound awesome. I am getting excited about getting the work done on it and picking it back up again !
Just wanted to say thanks for providing such a great place for information.

Good morning all. My name is Bill Kociaba and I am in Hollywood, Fl. I am 49 and first picked up a sax only 8-9 years ago. I played guitar for sevral years prior so my musical knowledge is stronger than my playing skill. I always wanted to learn to play the sax and while going through a divorce sevral years ago decided to give it a try. Its been on and off ever since. When the real world gets in the way the horn goes in the closet til I can again focus my energy on it. I play a 53 The Martin tenor with an autolink metal mouthpiece. My biggest problem is I want to learn and play everything at once. Rock, Funk, Blues and jazz(talk about a lack of focus(lol)) this site is amazing! thanks to all of you in advance for all the info you offer. If there is anyone out there in the south Fl area who might like to get together to play or just exchange ideas please contact me directly at williamkociaba@comcast.net

Hello everybody,
I'm 17 and a junior in high school. I play several instruments, but the tenor sax (mostly classical) and the mandolin (bluegrass) are ones I play best. I play the alto and soprano sax and am taking piano lessons. I also can play bass and soprano clarinets. I guess you can say I'm obsessed with music. I've been in several honors bands and am currently working on preparing for the KY Governor's School for the Arts. I plan on majoring in music in college, not sure specifically--but definitely MUSIC!

Hi All,
I just signed up. I played tenor years ago, never very well. I just retired from the fire department in California and decided it was time to revisit music. My soul needs nourishment after many years of witnessing tragedy and pain.
I have an H. Couf tenor and just started taking flute lessons. I don't expect to ever perform or do any more than perhaps play around with friends - which is all I need.
This is a great site and I look forward to this new association.
Thanks

Hello SOTW Members!
I have found this site very useful and informative for my search to purchase an alto for my daughter. Lots of good discussion and info here!
I played piano, clarinet, trombone, and tenor back in school. Now, 20 years later I can get involved again through my kids. I'm having a lot of fun with it.
Eventually I'll pick up a tenor just for myself!

Hello sax lovers! I just found this place, and I think its great! I've been playing a tenor and alto for over 40 years, and now the bari bug has bitten me.
So I hope there's some good info for a new bari player - I need help! :D

Hey, I'm Max. I'm in high school. I've been playing clarinet for around 7 years or so, and I've recently began to actually take it somewhat seriously. I hope to get a new one soon, but for now I have a Vito Resotone something-or-other, with a Vandoren 5RVL mouthpiece.
I also started playing tenor sax about a month ago and bought a Belmonte. It's not great, but for the price, I won't complain too much. I just need to practice.

Hi all,
I play tenor sax. I have been playing for 3 years, but am doing ARCT in piano. I joined this forum because it seemed like an interesting place where I can learn more about my favourite instrument. I am not trying to be egotistic, but I think that I am a decent jazz player for someone who is still in high school. I have a quartet with a guitar player who isn't half bad. I also have a private teacher but still haven't managed to learn rhythm changes:?. The first jazz tune I ever played was Tenor Madness by Sonny Rollins
Jazz is my passion ;)
Most inspirational player: Coltrane
Favourite player: They are all too great :)
Favourite quote: "I start in the middle of a sentence and move both directions at once." ~ John Coltrane

Heyo~ Another new member here. I registered as "Roadhouse" because I play roadhouse style tenor. In the fifties I altered my driver license to get in clubs and hear the giants playing on the midwest circuits. An old fellow called Sax Mallard gave me some pointers and soon I was getting gigs. (I was 17 and had been playing since age nine.) I currently play with a zydeco group in the Puget Sound area around Seattle. My axe is a 1928 Conn Transitional and I use a Wolfe Tayne mouthpiece. I also play guitar and bass but love my tenor.

Hi all ...
My name is Roel. I play saxophone, mainly on tenor, but from time to time on soprano and alto too and rarely on my EWI. In the past I use to have a baritone too, but when I "moved" from The Netherlands to Bulgaria I sold it among some other instruments (guitar, drum-kit, clarinet, flute and so). Yes, I did use to play on a bunch of different instruments, but most of them just for fun or out of curiosity, not because I'm good at it or some sort of super talent or what ever. Nowadays it's just saxophone ...

I love Jazz (most of it's sub-styles, except for Dixieland and free/avant garde) but have played and still do different styles. From electronic (with DJ's) to jazz standards, reggae, latin, pop, what ever is needed or I feel like doing at the time ...
---
My favorites are Cannonball Adderley, Hank Mobley, Michael Brecker and Joshua Redman. The first sax players I got some music from on tape - for my 11th birthday to be precise (my grandpa gave it to me) - was and album called "Coleman Hawkins encounters Ben Webster" and on the other side of the tape an album of Juke Ellington with Johnny Hodges called "Side by Side".
Now, even though they are a great source of inspiration, I would not even dare to suggest my playing is anything like them, I hope one day to be able to grow close enough to be standing in their shadows, but for now I just do my best and enjoy playing first of all.

Alright, I guess that's more then enough about me, I don't wanna be accused of spamming or something ... whatever :)
