I am a tenor player having intonation problems in my higher register (starting at high Bb and up). It is consistantly flat (especially the palm keys), and I cannot seem to bring the pitch up without resorting to biting.

I have tried adjusting my tongue position and the firmness of my embouchure, but nothing seems to work.

I understand that vertical pressure is a bad thing, but I can't be playing flat all the time either. Any suggestions?

Has anyone else played your horn? Air speed will make some difference. I suggest you read Paul Coats' articles in the Beginners Corner - especially regarding embouchure tension and do the mouthpiece exercise A=880 (for alto). A reed one half size stronger might help if you can still manage the low notes. Old reeds that have worn out will start playing the palm keys thin and flat.

Starting on A2, make sure you have plenty of air support (and speed), try a new reed the same size you are using, or go a half size stronger and read Paul's articles. Good luck. 8)

Do what MS says. If you still have a problem, try some larger chamber mouthpieces and push them on the neck far to tune up.

Push your mouthpiece in and relax your embouchure to play in tune.
