Hi Everyone...
I have an oppurtunity to purchase a Selmer Soprano Series II. It is in excellent shape, no dings or dents, just needs a new cork on the neck.
What would be a fair price for this ?
I would appreciate any imput.
Thanks.

Check on Ebay and see what they are going for. I don't think they have a great resale value. I think a lot of players consider them to be stuffy sounding, but I like the dark tone of mine. I bought it used a while ago for $1,400.00.

IMHO, you can get a better horn than the II for 1200 US. I recently found a Yamaha 62 soprano for just a hair more.
Selmer II vs Yamaha 62... Can we agree that they are different? Which is better is in the mouth and ears of the beholder.

Dr G,
We can definately agree that they are different. I am just not crazy about the series I and II selmer sopranos -- or the MKVI soprano for that matter.
I do like the series III though, but they are significantly more expensive than a used 62 or even a new Yani.
My vote for sopranos is the 62 and a yani 901 or 991 or the bronze Yanis.
I would also give a thumbs up on the series III and if you can find a late serial # buescher true tone, I would go for that as well.

Dr G,
And you are 100% correct, whats better is the opinion of the player that plays the horn.
If the Series II is the right horn, go for it, but always check for other options so that all of the cards are on the table.
I bought a 62 but would have prefered a bronze Yani.

Seems like we agree on quite a bit. My sop of the last many years has been the Serie III (with curved neck and JVW Bari m'piece). I bought it used for $2000 when it was just a year or so old.
My next most fav' sop (out of a dozen or so over the last couple decades) was a goldplate late serial number Buescher TrueTone. The also-rans and runners-up (that I've owned) include straight Conns, curved Bueschers, and Mk VI's. I've never gotten into the Yamahas nor Yani's but I am interested in trying a curved bronze Yani just to see for myself.
The other horn that would catch my interest now is a Baby Borgani Jubilee. The new tenor continues to amaze and please. :borg:
