What is a fair price to pay for lessons? My teacher (in the UK) has just put up his prices again (the second time in 18months) and now charges £24 per hour. He is good, but this is starting to feel very expensive.

Well here in the US it ranges from 15/ 1/2 hour to 60 a 1/2 hour. I charge 25.00 a 1/2 hour. It depends alot on how good the teacher is and what the area he is teaching in is like(Can the students afford a higher rate?)
Try hiring a plumber . Their rates are much higher.

£24 per hour sounds about right. You might pay more in London and possible slightly less elsewhere.
This makes a half hour lesson about the same as three packs of cigarettes - and much better value.

Belgium: 44 euro a year (perhaps a bit more for adults, but no more than 80 euro anyway) for 1 hour saxophone lessons, 1 hour music history, 1 hour clarinet lessons and 1 hour jazz ensemble a week. Available for every Belgian inhabitant. Conservatorium graded teachers with a degree in teaching as well....

£24 per hour would be a little expensive here(the East Midlands) £18-20 is more usual, although I daresay in the south £24+ would be the norm.

As of today (11/5/2004), that converts to $42 USD. Seems high for a
grade school/high school level teacher. Not so high if a college level,
low for some of the top end pro's here in the Boston Area, who might
charge $100-200 per hour!. It depends on the location, and the
experience of the teacher really.

I charge my high school students $20 USD for 1/2 hour (That converts
to 11.38 GBP)

I'm sorry - I just noticed that the price you quoted is for one hour
- not a half-hour, as I had assumed.

That does seem like a fair price to me. I charge $20 USD per half-hour,
and $35 USD per hour

I'm new to teachig so i charge 10$ per 45 minutes session. Basically so I can get students and keep them. I might hike up the price in a few years but I'm not greedy and don't expect people to have that kind of money. I just love music and enjoy teaching it.

The pros around here charge 60 an hour. (Good players but not name players.) I've heard that the names charge 100 an hour. When I get the occational student I charge 15 for a half, 25 an hour. I like teaching way to much and have a hard time charging for what is fun for me. I think the basics can be taught by a lower level teacher but then you need to go off to a good pro after the first few years. I wish I had studied with a good pro in college rather than what was availible at my University. (Univ of Mo , St Louis) There were alot of holes in my playing upon graduation even after studying for 3 years with the "teacher" there and doing a senior recital and playing lead alto in the jazz band. I've taken lots of lessons subsequently and every teacher has at least one good point/trick that is useful. Its also helpful to study with a variety of teachers in your area if you are trying to scare up gigs. You might get the teachers "throw away " gigis. K
