I started learning the tenor sax 3-4 months ago. I generally practice for about half an hour or so before work and again in the evening. What are people's views on disassembling the sax and putting away in the case. Is this strictly necessary or can the sax be left on its stand? (subject to it being safe from dogs, children etc)
I do remove, wipe and put away the reed each time and use pull through and wipe down the sax about every other day - but have recently noticed that the cork is starting to come loose and wondered whether this may be due to it being left damp?
any comments or suggestions much appreciated
The advantage of leaving your saxophone on its stand does that you will be likely to play/practice more often since it is readilly available. But if you have pets or children, you may not want to leave it on the stand. Also there will be more dust, even if you remove it often, that will get accumulated in those hard to reach places of the sax. If that is something that you don't mind and that pets/children are not an issue, yes you may leave your saxophone on its stand. However, if you choose to do so, one good thing to remember would be to swab your sax after each play and to remove the mouthpiece. That way the neck cork won't suffer premature dammage from moisture. Also, it would be a good idea to remove the reed from the mouthpiece (yeah, some of us are lazy and don't do that all the time) The reason is; a wet reed left on the mpc may change shape in the long run, and of course may develop some...

Hi Charley! There has been a lot of discussion on this. Take a look in the Miscellaneous category and find "Stand or Case" and that should give you a good head start on your question.
