Howdy,
Been surfing this forum for about a month and finally decided to register and become part of the community.
Let's see... I started playing sax in 2nd grade on a King Zephyr alto, and moved to an Olds Ambassador. While in middle school I saved up money and bought a WWBW generic soprano. I never cared much for the technical aspects of the horns I always just liked playing. I'm starting to become more interested these days in what makes a horn a horn.
After finding my Olds to be too beat up, I borrowed to school's YTS-52 the final quarter and took a great liking to Yamaha.
I will be going into my third year at Santa Clara University, and now that I'm a serious music student I decided to research and purchase a new horn (hence me surfing this page for advice.) I just bought a Yamaha Custom Z (S) and am awaiting it's arrival this Thursday! I will definitely be on here a lot looking for technical advice and opinions on how to improve my sound.
Thanks!
- Nick

Hello fellow players (and wannabees like me),
I'm a 45ish dad of 1 who's been taking Soprano Sax lessons for about 2 years. I needed a hobby to replace my hockey, which is getting closer to the end than I would like to admit, and always wanted to play music.
I did take a stab at the tenor for a year when I was 6 or 7, but it was bigger than me and I never pursued it. Love the soprano now, want to get better each time I play and hope you feel the same!!
Here's a low C for ya, sounds like a foghorn on my SOP. :line0:

Hello All
I am an enthusiastic middle aged beginner, a devotee of the great Sidney Bechet and therefore attempting to scale the Everest of the soprano. I am taking lessons, having convinced all-comers that, no, I didn't want to start with the clarinet and no, I didn't think it might be better to begin with the alto ! I'm loyal to Sidney even though I know HE didn't start with the soprano and that I probably shouldn't either! I'm looking forward to this forum and to exploring my musical horizons....

Hello SOTW,
:treble:I'm an Old player returning to the craft after a substantial absence from Professional performing. I have been "playing" Sax for about 13 years, started with the clarinet, to the trumpet to the Alto Sax, tenor, soprano ect.. ect... at a very young age as I'm only 28 now. I love music "classically trained" whatever that means... I perform all different variations of genres of music due to my eclectic nature I find the beauty in all forms of music. I'm deeply interested in meeting people who have a passion for the craft and and understand the direction of making good music.

Hello SOTW. Been looking at this site for quite some time now, and decided to make my own account and ask my own questions for a change. A bit about myself: I play the alto(7 years), soprano(1 year), tenor(~6 months), clarinet(~2 months), and getting a bari in 4 months. I'm first chair in my Advanced Band at school on the alto. Been in Adv. Band for 2 years now, going on 3, and plan to major in music education in college. I look foward to getting some questions of mine answered and broadening my horizons on saxophones and music.

Hey everybody! I'm David (or D.J., whichever you prefer). I'm probably one of the youngest here. I'll be 18 in July, but I have been playing the alto sax for about 10 years now. I started at 8 playing by ear, then got to middle school and started playing in the band and reading music, and have been going ever since. I am stuck on Kenny G's version of Pick Up the Pieces featuring David Sanborn. IT'S FREAKIN' SICK! Do you guys have any tips on how to be more consistent in the altissimo range? Right now, the highest I can go is Super A (A above the A above the staff), but I can't get G consistently without squawking. Strange to be able to hit a higher note more consistently than a note one step below, I know. I'd really appreciate some tips. Thanks :)
You aren't the youngest -- I'll be 18 in September ;)

Well, let's see...
Been playing for 8 years, am a senior in high school getting ready for college auditions. My idols are in the following order:
1. John Coltrane (mostly later period but early work is great too!)
2. Jerry Bergonzi
3. Michael Brecker
4. Joe Lovano
5. Sonny Rollins

7. Chris Potter/Ravi Coltrane (Tie)
8. James Carter/ Dave Liebman (Tie)
9. Lenny Pickett
10. David Sanches
11. Julius "Cannonball" Adderley
12. Phil Woods
13. Coleman Hawkins
14. Dexter Gordon
15. Hank Mobley
16. Illinois Jacket
17. Gato Barbieri
My setup at the moment is:
Cannonball "Raven" Big Bell Tenor
Jody Jazz HR* 8 w/Francois Louis Ultimate Ligatue
Alexander DC and Superial reeds (but sometimes "aged" Gold Rigotti)
Starting soon though will be:
Selmer Paris Reference 36 Tenor
Cannonball "Raven" Big Bell Tenor

Hi All,
I'm from Jersey, Channel Islands and I'm thinking of getting a Sax.
I played the Flute from age 9 but tailed off in my early 20's because it wasn't cool enough
Through school I played in the school "big band" and had a rock band for a year or two. I have also been bashing a gutar on and off over the last 20 years.
Getting a bit older now and I really miss the music. Always fancied playing the Sax so here I am.
Cheers

Hello All,
Adam here. 44 years old, started playing in 6th grade. Stopped playing in school when got to high school because we were not allowed to play in the 'stage band' unless we also marched (I was too cool for marching music :) ). I have played over the years with no formal training. I can, however, read and write notation. I play solo and in the section at my church and in variety dance band. I love funk, soul, gospel, etc.

My name's Joseph, I started playing alto 7-8 years ago, can't remember. Can play all saxes just fine though at the moment I'm primarily focused on tenor. I'm partial to Bebop, but I love to play any jazz and pretty much anything else. Sometime in the next few years I'm going to life very very roughly and take a Sabbatical and dedicate an entire year to just practicing all day every day. Hopefully I'll have my own sound at that point, and I'll try to edge my way into the boston or new york scene.. we'll see.

Hi Everyone,
Well I've only been playing Sax for about 6 months now. I'm 24 but I've been playing clarinet since I was 6. I now play in the Irish Army Band. It was only a matter of time before I took up Sax and I am now playing Alto.
I'm playing a student model Jupiter Alto at the moment, but have my eyes on a Selmer Super Action 80. It's away having a service at the moment but will be looking to get my hands on it when it gets back.
My background is in classical clarinet, but I really want to experiment on Sax now and am looking to get into Jazz. I'm lucking enough to be playing with my own 8 piece Band Midnight Swing, so I have a good outlet. Check us out on www.midnightswing.eu

Hey,
My name is Carrie and I'm a senior in high school, I'll be 18 in January :) I've been playing the saxophone for 7ish years now. I'll be auditioning for music schools in the next year in hopes of majoring in either saxophone or music education.
I play on a YAS-62 that I got my freshman year of high school. I love it :) I use a Selmer s80 C* mouthpiece with either Vandorean 3 reeds or Hemke 3.5, depending on my mood. For jazz, I use a Meyer 5 mpc with Vandorean Java reeds, also 3s.

Hi there. I'm 38 and just decided to start playing sax now. I'm very excited!
I'm from Mexico City and starting to look what sax I'm gonna get. Here is very difficult to get many brands, but I have found the Yamaha YAS 23, Jupiter 565 GL and a Conn-Selmer Director (and a bunch of super cheap chinese brands that I plan to stay away from)... Any suggestions????
Thanks.

I am new here. I started playing guitar twenty-five years ago, played bass too for five years and now saxophone for seven. I play a Kohlert Alto and a Buescher Tenor. I really love my Kohlert, and hope to find a good tenor someday. I am recording now, and am pleased to have some fine Chicagoland musicians to accompany me. More are welcome. I joined this group to find out more about these instruments and to share knowledge.

Hello!
I just found this thread today. I have been reading things on this forum for quite a while but haven't got around to registering until recently. I have played clarinet for 6 years, alto for 4 years, and soprano for 2 years. I also dabble in piano and drums. I will be a senior in high school this year and am looking forward to continue studying saxophone as well as meeting all of you.

Well I just started on this site today.
I've been playing alto saxophone for a few years in my highschool band. I love music, and the saxophone is awesome to play. The only sax i've ever played on is a Beginner Yamaha student model that I got from a friend. I don't plan on ever making a career of playing saxophone, but I DO plan on playing it for enjoyment throughout the rest of my life. So yea, that's me.
P.S. In case it matters, I also play piano and guitar for 9 and 4 years, respectively. Knowing the piano actually made it really easy to learn the sax.

Hey guys. Good forum here. Lots of good advice and such.
I'm a professional saxophone player in the SLC, Utah area.
I've been playing for 22 years, and I'm 33 years old.
I also work for Cannonball Musical Instruments as their chief
hand customization expert.
Been reading these forums for quite a while, so I thought I'd join
up and get to know some peeps.
I'm also a High School Band director and have been for 11 years.
My principal interest is conducting, and my car. I'd say saxophone,
but that's more like a disease. LOL
Anyway, looking forward to hanging here.

Hello everyone! My name is Scott Davis, I'm 41, been married for 11 years with two sons 10 & 7 yrs old. I live in Muncie, Indiana and I have been employed for 14 1/2 yrs with the Indiana Dept. of Correction. As for the sax: I started when I was 11 on an old Bundy alto. Joined band in 6th grade and played up through graduation from high school on alto, tenor and baritone sax. Went to Ball State University to major in music education(with a minor in Jazz/Commercial Music)which went all right until student teaching, which was a disaster! I graduated with a General Studies degree in '90. After that, I barely played at all, eventually selling my Yamaha YAS62 from my college days. That changed in 10/95, when I went to see the late, great Boots Randolph in concert-THAT DID IT! I went and bought a tenor and have been playing ever since. In Jan '07, I bought a baritone sax, and in March of '08 I bought both a soprano and an alto sax. I just recently joined a band , and have recorded some with a friend from work who's into smooth jazz. A few favorites- Grover Washington, Jr., Boney James, Ronnie Cuber, Gary Smulyan, Nick Brignola, Boots Randolph. Well, that's all for now! Thanks, Scott Davis

Hi everybody,
I've been reading your forum for some time before I made the big leap in registering.
I'm glad to become part of this community. I found a lot of good tips.
I started the sax in 1974, gave it up in 1981 (concentrated on writing music and on the piano) and took it up again 4 years ago. Ive been playing in different bands since then and this one is my latest:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=853175&content=music
Sax-Vibes-Bass (with a bit of piano)
I hope you can take time to listen to some of the tracks and maybe write some constructive tips about my improvisations (I still have a lot to learn) and sax technique.
Thanks for reading (and maybe listening)

Hi,
Also new here (duh)... Have been coming to this site on searches for info on sax-repairs and stuff, so thought I'd join up since I do come here somewhat regularly..
Been playing the alto-sax for about 20 years and recently picked up a soprano, which I like very much.
Currently in the process of overhaulin' a Dolnet soprano which had been lying in its case for 2 decades at a friends place.
Current setup:
Alto: Selmer III, VanDoren Optimum AL4, Rovner lig and Alexander Superial DC 3 reeds.

:treble:Hello:treble:
My name is Tom aka Nightprodigy, I am 22, have a wife of 5yrs, and 2 wonderful kids(most of the time :D) Music has been in my family for generations one way or antoher. Great-Granddad was Grandfater was, mother was a great musican, and my father was an On-Air personality until he passed away. So I am a "late bloomer", with the heart and desier to play sax.
I have looked on SOTW for a few weeks now and got some great info, but i stil have many question. like; can sax be self tought? if you really cant really afford a teacher. And I really love the sound of a Tenor being played, but Alto seems a bit easier to learn. If i learn Alto, what would be the bigest differance in changing to a Tenor, beside the size?
So if anyone can help, it would be cool to chat. Of cource i am going to continue to look on SOTW for more info as well.
Kick back with you all in another time.

Hello All
I'm 44 and last played sax 29 years ago and then only for a few months. I've always listened to sax music -- all styles -- and am interested in learing again. I'd really like to play the soprano and only use a synthetic reed. Emails and PMs telling me I'm mad gratefully received. Yes, I may give up and buy a WX5 :-)
I very much enjoy the tone and content of this group and have enjoyed reading the posts.
I plan to buy one of the first Vibratosax A1s.

Hi - I`m an old UK wrinkly just about to give up the clarinet & sax even tho` they still stand in the corner of my teaching studio. I shouldn`t say this really should I, because music is still my life, and I`d love to be able to devote more time to practising but other interests keep getting in the way.
These are a little composing and arranging, using Sibelius, and my new keeping fitter regime - cycling, but the roads are just that little bit more busier than 55 years ago.
My worst moment was my recital on a worn out and hopelessly out of tune `A` clarinet - the phone stopped ringing. My best moment wasn`t performing (unfortunately) but having my clarinet sonatina `Hauntings` recorded by Leslie Craven (to be released this Autumn), principal clarinet - Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera.
The older one gets, one realises that there is more and more to learn, but less time to learn it in. Yet there`s only one way to do anything - and that`s `properly`.
I`ll try to contribute a little bit more positively soon.
Thanks - nice to meet you all.

Hey, I'm new to the SOTW forum as well as the sax. Just got a Selmer Bundy II Bari and working on learning...I am 20 and am an engineering major...we dont have much of a music program.
I'm a brass player naturally...started on French horn as primary instrument, and slowly added on the rest of the family: trumpet, baritone/euph, trombone, tuba, and flugelhorn. (although I do not own my own baritone/euph...I had to borrow someody elses)
Anyways, I'm hoping to get real good at bari because our school jazz band (Univ of Southern Indiana) has never had one. Because the school doesnt own any instruments and not many college students have their own bari.
So i'm going out on a limb here, investing about 1200 in the sax and rebuild on keys...
we'll see how it goes.
So if anybody wants to know ANYTHING about brass...i'm your man...
and if anybody has good advice on bari, I'll take it.

Hello SOTW :)
I'm 18 and i'm a student :P. My main instrument is the trombone but I have recently taken up the Sax as a side-project.
My lousy setup is this:
Buffet Crampon 100 Series Tenor Sax
Yamaha 4C mouthpiece
Generic reeds (no info)
But I've invested in a Berg-Larsen 110/6 stainless steel and some Rico Jazz Select reeds. That oughta spice things up ;)
Oh well, enough with this. :D Time to hit the forum
Cheers

Hey all,
I'm a high school sophmore sax player with a deep passion for anything having to do with the saxophone. My friends and family are constantly bombarded by my rambling about my exitement over a new discovery of what the saxophone can do (it's a wonder I still have friends:D). Other than playing, I try to balance time between the IB program, my church's worship team, and socialization. I'm more of a classical player myself, but I do enjoy playing jazz as well, and I'm also in the process of trying to form a sax quartet. I'm looking forward to what I can learn from this community:)

Hi All,
My name is Stewart, never played played sax before, but always thought they looked and sounded nice :) and have been reading SOTW fervently for the last few weeks... leading to.....
accidentally bought a nice looking old 1966 Nikkan 020 (student/int?) for cheap the other day and already have it stripped down to reset one post, straighten a few keys and give it a freshen up... how hard can it be? ;)
it looks and feels solid (almost new except for the pads and a few bits here and there), so hopefully it can make the right sounds
still wondering how that box of 40 year old reeds will go :D
looking forward to learning lots very quickly... oh and finding somewhere to practice....

hey!
i'm 15, i've been playing since 6th grade. i'm still using my student model Bundy ll because i don't have the money to get something up to my level, but i can really make that baby sing. i use an otto link tone edge 5* and a jody jazz classic alto 7*, both with Rovner dark ligatures. i use Vandoren 3 zz's on the link and Vandoren v16 3s on the jody jazz. i recently got a Selmer la Voix curved soprano for my birthday, not the best soprano in the world but it will do until im in college and its really fun to play which is very important :) it came with a selmer paris S80 mpc but ive only had the horn for a month and i haven't saved up enough money to get a good jazz mpc. i'm looking for a good jazz soprano mpc in the $80-100 price range that will be bright but not too bright and has good intonation in the low register so if you know a mpc that roughly fits that discription please tell me :) after high school i plan on going to the university of northern colorado and getting a masters in music education or jazz/saxophone studies
my biggest influences are:
charlie parker
denis diblasio
michael brecker
cannonball adderley
oliver lake
john coltrain
pete king
stanley turrentine
hamiet bluiett
kobayashi kaori

I am a mom of a bari sax player. I played flute, my oldest son played flute...and now we have a giant creature in the back seat called bari. This looks like a fun place to be a part of, I have visited from time to time and maybe I can get Jon to, also!

Hey everybody! Iv been using SOTW for a couple of weeks now to find opinions on a new sax. I am a sophmore in high school and have been playing since fourth grade. I am just starting to do jazz. I started playing on a selmer AS300 and just recently ordered a P Mauriat 67R. I also play a 1945 10M.
PS what does "GAS" mean when people are talking about saxes?

Hi everyone,
I'm new here. I have some questions about saxs and flutes. I have been looking all over for a student alto sax for my son who will being going into fourth grade. I'm hoping not to spend too much. I spoke with a guy in Freeport, NY who sells Musikwerks brand saxs for $398 and Musikwerks brand flutes for $188. I have been unable to find anything about Musikwerks brands instruments online. Does anyone know anything about Musikwerks if they are a decent student instrument or crap? repairs easy or hard and expensive? I'm really at a loss, my husband and I never played so I have no idea what I'm looking for.

Hi everyone! I am kemosabe form Portugal :D
I bought a sax alto a few mouths ago - something i wanted to do a long time...
In the first few weeks i had a friend/teacher that teached me the basics about music (learn how to read a sheet, etc) but then due to his work he can contact with me on a regular basis anymore. So i decided to look more for myself in the internet about this awesome instrument called saxophone...
Im a begginer and i would like to learn a few tips, lessons on the sax and also to practice some simple musics specially from tv series and movies to show to my friends...:)
Im on hollidays now so i have time to spare. I look forward to learn from everyone and to share my experience.
Thanks.

Hello everyone, new to the site i just found it today but its already proven a huge help. I've been involved in music since i was ten, i started on the violin, moved to clarinet, alto, then tenor and barry. Also played Bass clarinet for awhile. Twelve years later im still involved but much less as i am trying to restore a gorgeous Buescher low tone tenor and just purchased a pan american elkhart silver clarinet last week. I saw it at a garage sale and had to have it. :)

Hey everyone! (says Brian from New Jersey.)
I've been a lurker at this site for...well, too long, before I decided to hit the "Register" button. I've fourteen years and three hundred sixty three days behind me, having played the clarinet for five years, bassoon for almost one, and the tenor saxophone for...well, a few weeks.
And...wow. After picking it up and playing through a couple scales and simple passages, I came to the conclusion that the tenor sax was the most fun instrument I've ever played. I've tried a good number of instruments in the past, but this is one that had me from the first note.
I'm hoping to learn all that I can from you guys...and who knows, maybe one day I'll manage to ascend to the level of the regulars here. :)
Regards,
Brian

Hi.
I'm Mike from New Zealand. I'm 46 and (sort of) play a Yanagisawa T991 tenor with a Yanagisawa #5 metal mouthpiece.
Whn I say 'play', I mean that i've recently gotten back into it after neary 30 years. I played for about 3 years at High School on what I believe was a Dolnet tenor. It was a silverplated sax with a micro-tuner on the neck and things like Parisian & Royal Jazz engraved on the bell.
Soooo, it's pretty much back to basics....

I heard about these forums for a few years but have been too busy to check out these forums...
I'm Roxy Modesto, known in the Metro Manila area as the little lady on baritone saxophone for Saxophoro and Corporate Lofi (www.corporatelofi.com). I'm currently studying under Dr. Michael Young as the College of Music at the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus, and have been studying saxophone since grade 6 growing up in Jakarta, Indonesia. I give props to my band director, Ms. Davidoff for getting me into baritone saxophone and jazz in general. Dad's got plenty of listening, so I've been growing on those since growing up in Indonesia.
Right now I'm playing on a C.R. Kessler baritone sax, stock mouthpiece 2 1/2 zz jazz reeds, and yamaha tenor (model yt 100 i think...), ys 32 alto saxophone, and bass clarinet (for purposes of doubling)...
I'm hoping to meet new sax players through these forums, and gain some insight in playing this great instrument :)

Hello All,
I'm a former sax addict that has come full circle after about 6 years of not playing and started dusting off my old horns and jumping into it again. I've also been charged with selling/consolidating my Uncle's Vintage Sax collection that includes approximately 45 horns. So you will probably see a number of value questions and for sale posts come from me before to long.
Any way hope everyone having a good day.

I'm not sure if I am a nuub or not because I may have joined this forum several years ago under a different ID (or I may be growing senile.) Regardless, here I am. I am a 47 year old divorcee who semi-seriously played the saxophone through college at the University of Tennessee. At that time I was playing a late model (72-73) Mark VI alto that eventually I was forced to sell. Seven years ago or so (after my split with my husband), I wanted to get back into playing. While I was starting to get my chops back, I got caught up in trying to recapture the sound of my youth by going through several different horns. Unfortunately, that was a loosing battle. After returning to school to finish a master's degree, I again put playing aside and I gave a Yani A992 to my little brother. So today I am sax-less and looking for another alto. Until then, I will hang around reading this board and keeping myself informed and amused.

hello - I have played a few different instruments over the years from violin, guitar, keyboard and clarinet. I haven't played the clarinet in a good while but recently decided to treat myself to a bog standard alto saxaphone. I used to love the clarinet and enjoyed Jazz from Ragtime to New Orleans and enjoyed improvising with syncopation and tone. I always wanted to learn the saxaphone as I feel it has a lovely rich belting sound. Anyway on week 2 and just experimenting with the tone - luckily my fingering seems to be good although my right thumb gets a little sore after playing for a while? Can you get a padded rest? Anyhow just to say hi!!

hello - I just found out about this forum yesterday so I decided to join. I have gone through three types of alto saxes and the third one I like the most. It's a stephanhöuser 1000(we think). I have been playing for almost a year and I was told that I have a very good ear. I am in 8th grade and I have been promoted to highschool band.

Greetings,
I have been enjoying some of the forums on SOTW so I decided to register and perhaps contribute where I can. I originally started on clarinet some 50 years ago, then in my early teens played with a big band of little kids and started doubling on tenor as well. Later I became extremely interested in alto as a result of the awesome sounds a guy I was playing with got from his Mark VI, so I sold everything I had and got my own. Played that through college and several formal and informal ensembles until one day I had a brief mental collapse and sold my horn to pay my (future) wife's rent. Don't ask. A few years later bought a Yamaha YAS-62 as stopgap or wishful thinking, but never liked it. Stopped playing altogether while raising kids but continued doing sound engineering and studio stuff. Suddenly decided to start playing again in 2003, bought a new Selmer Serie II which was either a mistake or an eye opener or something. Went through a Keilwerth phase, and then my wife bought me a Selmer Ref 54 Hummingbird to make up for the decades I had lived without the Mark VI. That is now my main horn, and I like it very much. Tenor playing is more out of necessity I guess, I have a couple of Yanagisawas that I also like very much. Also play recorder, flute, hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, owl whistle, keyboards and guitar. I live on the central coast of CA, which provides the best of both Southern Cal (earthquakes, fires) and Northern Cal (earthquakes, fires, fog).

Hello all! I found this site to get opinions on the maker of a sax I bought, and ended up totally hooked. Thanks for the wonderful advice and openess -- its a great place.
I played tons of jazz during high school and occasionally into college. Then I sort of fell off the horse. A decade or two passed, then suddenly in the last year or so I've really kicked back into playing, after falling back in love with my 1954 The Martin Tenor. Now I'm squeezing some practice time in between the day job and dad duties, and loving it as a way to relax and obsess about something besides work. I'm miles away from gigging shape, but have found that the patience of being an adult lends itself better to perfect practice than I had when I was young, making route mechanical exercises way easier.
I listen to all the old classic players (Trane, Dexter, Getz, Cannonball) and some of the newer ones (Potter, Garrett, Lovano). I've got old-school sound tastes -- big, bold, dark, round always wins for me over bright, piercing, contemporary.
My equipment:
Tenor: 1954 The Martin Tenor, awesome condition, modern STM Link 7*, Hemke 3 reeds.
Alto: "Camelot Deluxe" (totally unknown horn, maybe an Italian, Asian, or eastern European rip-off of some sort, but plays AMAZING!), Beechler diamond inlay (slightly tweaked), w/ Javas.
Peace, and thanks again for a great site!

whats up?!
My Name is Durand I am a music ed major at Southeaster Louisiana University. I'm 18 years old and just finished my first year of college. I've been playing sax since the 6th grade. I studied with a former rascher student throughout high school. I use to play on a rascher mouthpiece with size 4 Hemke reeds, until I was told I sounded like a homeless person on the streets of NYC at a masterclass (I was playing Persichetti's Parable XI btw) :/
I felt like complete crap afterwards so I am experimenting with my set up now. I currently play on the vandoren optimum mouthpiece and lig. I have a Yamaha Custom EX its not my dream sax but it gets the job done.... I named my sax cecilia.... but anyways! I am willing to try new things. This is what kind of brings me here I guess :)
I really want to do a recital soon and I want some input so hopefully when I find a decent microphone I'll put some of my playing up. (Right now I'm looking at the glazounov, Aeolian song, Tableaux, and Husa's Elegie)

Hi All,
I just joined this forum again. Couldn't remember my old user name because it's been a while and I'm 40 something. ;-)
My main instrument is the clarinet. Played all through high school, set it down and didn't pick up again until the end of 1999.
After starting to play the clarinet again, I got hooked up with some private teachers who have since taught me flute, alto sax and some piano.
I love making music and playing a number of instruments certainly opens up opportunities to play more. I have a day job in risk management and claims.
I play in several volunteer organizations. My church orchestra is the main one on clarinet and sometimes alto sax. Then a flute choir - mostly on flute obviously but sometimes the clarinet or bass clarinet join in the fun. Then a community Pops orchestra on Alto Sax and Bass clarinet. So I'm normally pretty busy. It's always good to learn more. I hope to add a tenor sax to the collection at some point.
I hope to learn what I can from here and maybe help others too. :treble:

Hello, after spending alot of time here i decided to join so here goes. I am a young sax player in daytona beach florida hoping to major in music this fall. I study instrument repair and use that to buy horns. I currently own 2 altos a 1927 chu horn in silver with goldwash bell and a Keilwerth Sx90R shadow. I use a Selmer C** soloist and a Meyer 7M with varing reeds depending on the style. I have 2 tenors, an H couf superba 1 and a Cheap chinese horn that i bought just to make a lamp(its now the brightest horn i have) I use the same type mouthpieces as I do on alto. and a very beaten ybs 52 using a selmer S80 E. I like to study saxophone designs too and even make my own designs.

Hi
My name is johnnypw. I've been perusing the forums for over a year now and I have finally taken the time to register and become a member.
I'm from Signal Hill, CA and I've been playing saxophone on and off for about 10 or so years. I currently play a Mark VI tenor, a Mark VI alto and a Yamaha YSS-62 soprano. I've been trying to hunt down a Mark VI soprano but no luck.
so if anyone out there is selling their Mark VI soprano, I would like to take a stab at it.

Hello fellas,
I'm a professional musician from sunny/wet Miami, FL. I play almost all the woodwinds (with the exception of the bassoon). Love to play. Always have. I fell in love with the sax the 1st time I saw it played in front of me.
I've toured with several artists and have had a wonderful time on the road. Similarly, I've spent equally as much time in the classroom mentoring future musicians. Both endeavors are equally fulfilling for me.
Hope to chat with as many of you as possible.
Truly yours,

Hi,
I don't play saxophone - I wish I did .... I like the instrument in the hands of the greats like Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Wayne Shorter, James Carter, ......... but also Benjamin Herman, Ferdinand Povel or Jan Menu, to name some Dutch musicians.
I love to share my passion for jazz, record collecting and other music projects that surprise me in my daily Keep Swinging Web Log (http://keepswinging.blogspot.com). Of course you're invited to visit it. Up to now I made more then 888 daily contributions. (http://keepswinging.opweb.nl/weblog.htm)
Hope to learn here a lot about the saxophone and its players .........

Hey there,
I'm a young multi-instrumentalist musician that wants to expand his tonal options, and sax is probably the best lead instrument out there so it's only natural that I play sax as my first wind instrument.
I'm going to buy a sax in the following weeks and I'll be playing a lot once I have one. I'll need some help on choosing one, though!
Hopefully I'll be able to help out before a while!

Hello all,
I (53) learn playing saxophone for ca. 8 years, always fascinated by the sound of that unique thing. Beginning with alto, later soprano and tenor, I went back to the (now vintage) alto, which is 'my instrument' in a certain sense. I'm collecting american vintage saxophones esp. those produced in LaPorte, Indiana. While researching their history, I found best infos on this great web site. If possible I would like to give something back into this community.

I joined quite some time ago, but I haven't been a very active member.
Hi, I'm Alex Qin and I'm going to be a freshman in high school this upcoming fall. I've been playing the alto saxophone for two years, but prior to that, I played clarinet for 4 years. The moment I picked up the saxophone, I knew that it was the right instrument for me.
I'm also mainly a classical saxophonist (not many of those where I live). I dabble in jazz for school bands, but classical music has always been my forte. I suppose my aversion to jazz was due to my first private teacher who forced jazz down my throat even though I honestly didn't want to learn it. Maybe if he had eased into it, I would have liked it more.
Hopefully I'll be more active in the future and stop lurking on this forum; it's a little daunting with all these amazing saxophonists (AKA... you're a scary bunch). ;)

Hey guys, just joined officially last night. I've been playing sax for 10 years. I'm going into my second year at The Ohio State University double majoring in microbioogy for premed and jazz studies (just because music has always been my passion!). I started out on a yamaha yas-23 student alto model. then moved to a B&S Series 2001 my freshmen year in high school. These are great horns by the way. I've seen a lot of mixed reviews across the web about them but I've been very successful with mine. It's very versatile and so I could use it to play classically, but it gave just enough edge when pushed that i could get jobs playing in the pit orchestra for musicals that came here through cincinnati. Anyway, I'm now awaiting the arrival of my new Selmer Series III alto that I'm beyond excited about. For jazz I play a jody jazz DV metal mouthpiece, and a selmer soloist for classical. I also have a cannonball big bell soprano that I pull out for fun from time to time. Nice to "meet" you all!

I'm Anthony and have played clarinet for 45 years....sax and flute not quite as long. I started playing professionally when I was 16...had some neat gigs; Las Vegas, touring bands; had a lot of terrible gigs. Got tired of band buses and got a business degree, and now make a good living in computers, still playing if the gig sounds good. Am now down to a Selmer SII sop, a 1937 Conn Naked Lady Alto, a 1936 Selmer Balanced Tone clarinet and Muramatsu flute and two handmade piccolos: a Yamaha and a Zentner.
I work at home and am bored a lot, but have to sit at my desk..so I browse various sites to keep busy...and this is one.
More than instruments, I have a deep appreciation for mouthpieces....and when I post, you'll hear me emphasize the importance of piece/reed setup over and over again.

Well, hello. I'm Brian. I don't know man, my friend by the screen name of "Yapper" got me to join this thing one day. I've been playing sax for about 8 years now and I totally sucked for the first two years. I mean, wow, couldn't read notes. The first year I just played random notes to match the rhythms of the song, (eg: Hot Cross Buns). The second year, I wrote the names of the notes under well, the notes and played that way. Uh, then the start of well, "me playing sax for reals" started when I became interested and then later enrolled in the Arizona Jazz Academy in the 6th grade. It wasn't the place, but my instructor that turned me around from well...you know to what I am today. He was a really good guy, and a darn good alto sax player. Anyway, I was in the Arizona Jazz Academy for two years before I moved to Minnesota where I met the worst band instructor ever. True story: We had this song called "Snakes" and it had some sort of chromatic scale in 16th notes. My friend Jason and I were in 8th grade at the time and when we got to that part we just played really really obnoxious random notes. After the song was over, she said, "good job alto saxes" and I gave up saxophone...sorta. To this day I still don't take sax that seriously compared to my combo-mates, but they say I'm a good Bari-player, and well, hell, that's good enough for me. We're called "Handful of Chris" (get it? lol). Sorry, I was bored and decided to type my saxophone life story, my bad.
Like I said, I don't take sax as seriously as I should so I don't really know what I have...
Alto: CONN something? Reed: Rico Royals (3)
Bari: Yamaha something? Vandoren (3)
Tenor: I'm terrible at the tenor, bari is definitely my forte, I don't have one, but I play the school's when I'm needed "somewhere". Reed: Vandoren (2 1/2)

:treble: Hello all. My name is Keith Felch and I'm new to this forum. I've been a full time woodwinds player for over 25 years, and have taught over 45,000 private lessons
I look forward to seeing what everyone has to say. Please visit me at www.KeithFelch.com, and also check out my book "Chord/Scale Mastery" there.
See you 'Round.

some shameless promotion for Keith. I've taken lessons from him on and off for years and can say with zero hesitation he's a monster player and a great teacher. This board is lucky to have him deciding to join up.

Greetings, I'm an aging rocker (51) who started playing alto at age 8 or 9, and played in school bands through high school. Started playing keyboards in high school and played with various rock and country bands through the early 80s then strayed away from bands but continued keyboard playing on my own. Started playing keyboards again with a rock and roll band two years ago and decided to dig out the old alto to see if I could still blow. Well, the old Conn wasn't so good after sitting untouched for 30 some years so I picked up a Yammy 23 Tenor to see how that worked. I started getting my chops back quicker than I thought and was able to put together enough riffs to play a few tunes with the band. Now I can hardly put the thing down and am about to spring for an 82Z tenor. I can hardly believe how much fun it is playing improv on the sax as opposed to being notebound as I was in high school. Anyway, I've picked up a lot of good info on this forum and hope maybe I can offer something too.
Equipment:
Old Conn shooting star alto
Yamaha YTS-23 with Link STM 6
Yamaha YTS 82Z (hopefully soon)
Keys:

Yamaha Motif ES-7

Yamaha CP-80 Electric Grand

I'm Craig - Played alto sax in high school from 1974-77. Put it away for over 25 years. Kids playing now in school. Between them and a mild middle age crisis, I own a soprano, alto, tenor and bari sax, around 13 guitars, a clarinet, trumpet, two keyboards and a drum kit. Luckily most of it in storage to keep the peace. No motorcycle yet....
the kids keep me going but I am just enjoying being a hack who plays around the house, wishing I had more time to at least be average. I play along with the kids to help them with their stuff, but that is about it.
Still with those catalogs coming in it is so tempting to buy just one more....

I'm Susan, and I live in the Dayton area. I've been playing tenor sax for about 2 months now. I play recorder in an old-time-fiddle-music type band, which makes picking up the sax all that much more frustrating. I know what I WANT to play, but it just won't come out the way I hear it in my head. I just keep practicing...

hi,
not sure if im doing all this right... but i just thought i'd introduce myself. I'm Ally and I'm 16 from the UK.
I started out playing the recorder... then moved on to oboe which I still play. But when I saw an older kid at school playing the alto sax, I was desperate to play! I've been playing for about 5 years on a Yamaha YAS62 and I recently did grade 8. I've also recently bought a Walstein soprano which I'm still trying to get to grips with!
Anyway thats me! :)

Hi all... I'm known across the web as poly-p man...I'm 15, been playing alto for about 6 years. I've played nothing but alto (but should get into tenor...). I especially love the tone/music style of Paul Desmond... but wouldn't pass up on some 80's funk.
ATM, I'm playing on a YAS-23 (except for the bad neck, it's been very good to me), with just about the worst setup ever... mpc: plastic yamaha 5c, lig: something made of metal, reed: 2 year old fibracell. That is actually the reason I finally joined instead of just stalking :D .
thanks a million for these forums!

Howdy,
I'm Pat, 17 from Minnesota, just outside the twin cities. Been playing the sax as my main horn for a while now, lots of jazz (not particularly well, mind you) and enough classical etudes and solos to get by, but working to expand on that.
Been geeking around the site for a while, but decided that I should actually join after a while.
Great to see what all's going on here.

Hello SOTW members:
I am 51 years old and have been playing the sax badly for over 40 years. I began playing in bands when I was 13 and haven't really stopped. I also play guitar, some keyboards and sing. I am a University music grad and have taught music in the public system here in Canada for over 20 years.
Most of my saxophone experience is in pop or rock music but my passion is jazz. I can "run the chords" but have always struggled with using the right notes to give my sound a more modern edge. I am making some headway with the George Bouchard method and feel I am headed into some new performance territory. I perform in four different groups but only one is jazz. I hope to get to a point where all of my performances are with the jazz group as I am tiring of the rock volume, carrying all the gear and the late nights. I play a 1958 Super 20 tenor but began on alto (I have an old MK VI and an H.Couf.)
I have been "browsing" this forum for years but decided to join up. Recently, I have had a bunch of computer work to do and have used this site as a nice break from the other work I have to do.
I feel fortunate to have found such a great resource of like minded individuals and enjoy many of the topics discussed.

Hi all, I've been browsing from the sidelines for a while now, decided to get involved.
I have been playing tenor sax - and taking lessons - for about five years, I began to learn after seeing how much my children get out of playing their instruments with their bands. Now I have joined a concert wind band myself and I'm having a great time.

Hi everyone!
I've recently picked up a horn again after a long hiatus. I started playing when I was 11. I'm 40 now, but haven't played in 15 years. My embouchure is gone and my lungs suck! LOL Really, they're not that bad, but man, I forgot what it was like to play a lot. I've got a few toys to choose from, some in better condition than others.
Soprano-

Alto-

C Melody-

Tenor-

The C Melody and the 1924 Alto both need full restos...I'm thinking about doing the C Melody myself as a learning exercise. I've been on the road for 2 years as the video engineer of a major tour so we'll see if I can find time to do it right!
I'm a big Porsche 914 fan. I also love photography and anything video (which is good since it pays the bills).

Can anyone out there tell me if a left handed sax or clarinet exists? Have been playing the Irish tin whistle in left handed manner (right hand on top) and would like to convert. Finding it impossible to learn whether such instruments exist.

Hi,
I've been browsing this site for info about altissimo and baritone saxes and though it was about time I enrolled !!
I started playing sax at school when I was 14, but I started life as a cellist (got to grade 6), and had to take up a second instrument when I went to Grammar school, and decided on the clarinet(also got to grade 6). My second clarinet teacher was a sax player, and as they say: the rest is history. I played tenor first, my Dad bought me one from a girlfriends Dad, no idea what make it was, silver though, I do remember, and ended with an alto as well, although I have no idea where that came from (might have been the same source).
Nobody wanted to play the baritone, so I ended up playing the monster which belonged to the Borough in various dance/jazz bands. I wanted to go to music college, but because of a lack of 'O' levels, I couldn't go, so I decided that my musical career was over and sold my instruments to my school. Big, big mistake.....one thing I have learnt over the years...never, never, ever sell your instruments....do I regret that one decision ...yeh ....bigtime.
A few years later, having tried my hand at guitar (self taught and not very good at that) my brother asked me join a band he was drumming with, and gave me the option of either keyboard (again self taught, and fairly o.k.) or sax. I went for the sax because in my heart I knew that was my best instrument (this is about 1981/2 I suppose), and went out and bought myself Yamaha alto and tenor saxes (23's). I have no idea why I chose Yamaha's, I guess price was probably a factor, and as they were new I suppose I had some idea of what I wanted to spend, and looking at today prices on new saxes, it's something I could not afford to do again (joys of being single I guess). So I play in a couple of 'pop' bands for a few years hoping for that big break (when I look back that is SO funny). With the last band, they were looking for a certain 'sound' and I end up with a Boss chorus and echo pedals which I must admit give, especially the tenor, a really nice full sound, and that echo pedal is so cool, and I have my sound, maybe it's cheating, I don't know, but at the end of the day, they are only effects, and I know I can play without them just as well. Bands split, record a couple of my own songs....
Then I meet the wife (now we are in 1985), and that's where it stops, musically, because we get married have kids, blah blah blah and music takes a back seat in my life until she mentions to one of our mutual friends that I used to play and I end up playing in a covers band about 6 years ago now. So today I play in 3 covers bands, although that will soon become 2. I still have my two Yamaha's and added an Odyssey soprano to my collection. It's not the best of instruments, I had to take it back to the shop 3 times before I was even remotely happy with it, but it was something I had always wanted, and the price was right (budget ...2 kids etc..get the drift), and for the amount that I use it, well, it serves it's purpose, but if I ever had the money.....
So, the newest of the bands are much better than the oldest, and the subject of what songs we want to do comes up, as it does, and Pink Floyd comes up. Well I am all for this, as the sax playing is the dogs bollocks. I have mastered 'Us and Them' pretty much after a lot of hard listening and writing down but 'Money' goes above what I would have called my 'range', and hence the searching for information on altissimo, which I am still struggling with, having now conflicting information on fingering, but I am determind to persevere with it because I would so like to master it.
The only item on my 'wish list' now is a baritone, but it would appear to be way beyond my price range, even the cheapest.
My name is really David Francis, I got stuck with Dave Sax from the band with my brother. Never really a Dave.
Grateful for any hints/tips.

Hi All,
New here and thought I'd officially say hi! A couple of members may already know me as I've been lurking for a while and recently made a couple of purchases in the marketplace to beef up the lacklustre collection from a single Century alto that I've had for 17 years (and has served me well :))
I'm 26 and live in Melbourne, Australia. I like jazz, but was classically trained for many years by a (very) patient tutor whom I have to thank for my technique and just about all my theoretical background. Whilst I am familiar with many of the jazz greats, I always find myself coming back to old Funk 45s rather than the usual standards.
Anyway, enough ramble. Very pleased to meet you all - feel free to PM me at anytime re anything.

Heya.
Just a note to say Hello. A little bit about me-
My name is Emily, but I prefer to go by Emm. I am 16, And am a senior. I Play on a Yamaha Bari (don't remember the model right now). I am in Symphonic band, and am striving to get into Jazz band this year. In the years past we have always had an amazing band! But this year we have a new teacher, so I'm not really sure how well we are going to play this year.
I started on Alto in 6th grade (5 years ago), switched to bari. in seventh, and starting the summer of seventh through the summer of 8th (2 years) I had to take a break from sax due to health issues. I have TMJ and something else they can't figure out what it is, but it attacks my joints so i have tendonitis like in every joint a lig. in my body.
I took piano during my 2 year break, and now i play both. I play saxophone in the high school band and take private piano lessons.
Due to my TMJ, i can't play alto or Tenor. Though Bari is the best anyways... :D
Um, other than that, i don't know what else to say. I try to do my best, Could probably practice more than I do...;) I don't plan on taking this pro or anything. Just to learn what i can when i am still young.

Good morning,
My name is Josh and I just joined here because I've been looking for a community to talk Saxophone with =D
I am 18 and have been playing Saxophone for about 7 years now, recently started taking Private Lessons so I could get into my college's Music Department. In less than a month I will be moving to Ellensburg, WA to attend Central Washington University to pursue a degree in Music Education.
I currently focus mainly on the Alto. I have a Yamaha Custom EX and am in love with it. I also have a Cannonball Tenor that is good as well, but I haven't played it since I graduated HS.
I look forward to talking with all of you and learning more about Saxophone, have a good one!

Hi!
I've been playing the sax for about 7 years, starting at age 14 (almost 21 now). I currently own 2 altos, one YAS-23 that I got in 7th grade, and one vintage Pan-American I just happened to find in a local flea market. I plan on going to college for a BME in instrumental performance next fall (2009) when I get my lip back into shape.
Been lurking around the site for a while now, and just decided to join. Looks interesting!

Hey everyone,
A newbie here. My name is Aaron. I've been playing the piano and violin for years, but I've always love saxophone. So I am basically planning to take up the saxophone (I haven't even got myself a sax yet).
I've been playing piano in hotels. From there I was exposed further to jazz. Naturally I want to be able to play the sax. After all, what is jazz without sax.
Plus, I'm always interested in Kenny G's music (although some people might not like him a lot - yeah, I know about the "pentatonic part", but he did it pretty well, didn't he?).
That's basically me in a nutshell.

Hi All!
I found this 4rum a wonderful place for newbies like me. I'm 38 and just play for fun, but music is one of my greatest hobbies. I started with bamboo flute when I was 10, all by myself and without a chance to take any music class until I went to college. I play a bit on concert flute now. 3 Years ago, I was obsessed by the sound of sax and I decided to buy my first alto, the Yamaha AS 100 which I could not classify but I guess it's a student model. I love Jazz and really appreciate this website for the tips and knowledges from it.

HI EVERYONE MY NAME IS LENNY.. I live in New Mexico and love to play saxophone. I have always practiced and love taking them apart. I have several saxophones all mark vi's and some sops. No baris. I learned to repair them through trial and error and was fortunate to mentor with the late David Willis. who actually worked in the original Selmer Factory. Twenty years ago he told save every horn u can get ur hands on. He was in his late 70's at the time. He taught me how to find leaks, take out dents, do repads, and make them work. SO I DID WHAT HE TOLD ME... NOW I have a basement full of saxophones. Literally! I also study with Doug Lawrence who lives a few blocks from me. I have never been so enthrawled with learning to make these horns play. If u ever need tips on making reeds play I can help u also. I can make any reed play... He has taught me how to check horns and make reeds play..Dont get caught up fighting mouthpieces, horns or reeds. Just enjoy playing this beautiful instrument. If u get a good sound u will practice more. I promise. THis has taken me years to learn the art of saxophones. From repair to getting a killer sound. These are secrets pro players never want to reveal. It can be frustrating and will drive u crazy. Dont let that happen to u.. LOVE UR HORNS!!!!

Hi All,
I have been reading here for months and decided that I want to start asking some questions. Played the flute for years and started the sax 4 years ago. Music camps, jazz workshops, house jams, occasional lessons and the wood shed are in my musical journey. I regularly visit the marketplace as this seems like a more reputable community market than eBay. This forum has done so much for me; thanks for all the great info.

Hello all!
I've been "playing sax" since age 13 (I'm currently 33), but have never understood how to practice seriously or be disciplined enough to sound really good. Dropped out of band my sophmore year of high school to play football (a lot of good that did me!) and have just picked it up once in a while ever since. A short stint in a church band reignighted my interest, only to be squashed by a series of job changes and search for self. I finally am at the point where I have decided to really put in the time, and become serious at playing this instrument that I love. I am greatful to have a resource such as this, and look forward to continuing the journey!

Hi, my name is David.
I have been playing sax since i was in 6th grade. Ever since I can remember ( around age 5 or 6) I have always wanted to play sax but could not because at the time my parents did not have any money at the time. When i moved to the current town i was in i had the opportunity to play a sax when i was in 5th grade and i knew the sax was right for me. Now a sophomore In high school, I am in my school's highest jazz band ( next year i will probably get 1st tenor) and the highest wind ensemble. I practice about every day now. I play in my churches choir. I play Tenor Sax, Guitar, Flute, Clarinet, Bass, a bit of piano, barely some brass instruments, and i want to learn how to play violin. My Godfather, who has been playing since he was 8 (now 55ish), and an older man from my church, (75-80 has also been playing sax since he was around 8) have told me I play very well and have a good tone for my age.

Welcome, Dave. What is your alto make/model?
I think you'll find SOTW to be the best resource for (re-)learning sax. The contributions from pros are priceless, but the questions from players along the entire learning curve are valuable. I started again 2 years ago after a 25 year hiatus, and with every point of difficulty I've encountered, I've found existing posts from players who had the same problem, and found the solution from either a posted reply or via a weblink or book recommendation.

Hi folks,
I'm Tammy (this already feels like AA), I'm 30 and I'm from Melbourne, Australia (soon to be moving to Denver but that's another story). My experience with saxes is only brief but never forgotten. I started learning tenor sax in a small woodwind group at high school when I was 14, but after only a year I had to give up the lessons and the sax when I changed schools. I was heartbroken and determined to get a tenor of my own one day.
Quite a few years later I saw one in a store and bought it on impulse - until I realised the financial implications, and had to return it 5 days later.
It's been about 8 years since I had to give up my tenor for the second time... but now I have the finances sorted out and have decided it's time to get one for keeps :)
I've been lurking on here a few days and had to join, this is a great place. I will indeed be harrassing you all for advice on a good purchase, so be forewarned.
My husband Matt is a drummer and also likes to tinker with other instruments, so I'm sure he'll look foward to the new addition when I get it. At this stage I'm mostly looking to play funk and rock (just for fun, though Matt is already talking gigs, I love his confidence!).
My all-time favourite musician is Ben Folds (cannot wait to play the horn lines in "Army"). I'm also quite a fan of Dave Matthews Band (RIP LeRoi) and Steely Dan... I'm sure the latter will either score me points or make me look like a big dork; probably a little of both.
Cheers!

Hi, everyone!~
I've played tenor since middle school, on and off, though the evil college years and possibly associated health problems have necessitated a bit of a break. *cries* Now that that's behind me, I'm pursuing the world of sax with quite a bit more vim and vigor. When I've time, I also play the piano and clarinet, and dabble in guitar (somewhat unsuccessfully). This forum is such an awesome resource!

Hello everybody,
I got totally hooked by the sax.
I play the piano and keyboard since I was 12 years old and occasionally some weird flutes (chinese, african, tinwhistles , whatever I could find).
I liked the sound of the sax, but never got the idea to play it myself.
Until two years ago 36 years after starting to play music) . A distant friend lend me a Yamaha Alto and I couldn't put it away.
Allas after 6 monds the fun was over. Then in Januari this year I bought a dented Weltklang Solist alto. Matthews in Edam (Holland) did fix it in no-time , I bought a decent mouthpiece (Meyer M6) and now I 'm the proud owner of my own sax.
I am taking lessons and enjoy playing very much.
This forum anwered many questions I had so I find I had to subscribe and introduce myself.

Hello, all!
I've been using SOTW for years as a reference for making decisions for saxophones for one of my daughters. (Thanks!) With her now off to college to major in saxophone performance, I have decided to learn how to play tenor.
I debated the merits of getting a new Chinese horn versus a used "big four" or Cannonball and ended up deciding to go with a Yamaha YTS-61 or -62. Just missed a 61 that was for sale on the SOTW Marketplace, but won a silver 62 on eBay yesterday!
I've been buzzing a mouthpiece with a tuner for a couple of weeks, but my kids are back from college this weekend, so I'll be getting a couple of embouchure lessons. I'm planning on taking lessons from my daughter's former instructor.
My favorite saxophonists are Sonny Criss, Ben Ellman of Galactic, the Nuclear Whales Saxophone Orchestra and my daughter. (Her Syrinx on alto is very, very good.) My goals are Galactic's Hit the Wall and Doublewide, Pete Thomas' Laid Back and Blue and Criss' brewing of Black Coffee.

Hi, this feels oddly confessional. I've been playing for 35 years, and can not imagine my life without my music. Currently I have a Mark IV tenor with a Guardala Studio mouthpiece, two altos- a Yamaha 875 Custom and a Yamaha 82Z Custom in silver- I play a metal Ponzol, a Yamaha 62 soprano with a Meyer. I'm married, two kids (who are guitars freaks, what can you do?).
I've been coming here for a long time but never signed up, largely because I didn't feel I had anything to contribute. However, I've decided to move to one make of saxophone for all three (s, a, t) and thought folks might enjoy my experiences in trying out a zillion horns. (Last week I tried seven tenors, my oh my, that was a rough day!). And so, here I am with you all.
I do recordings for family and friends, mainly with play-alongs (jazz kareoke?). If you have any interest, let me know and I'll shoot you some MP3 files (don't be too mean, I do have day job). In addition, I play in a big band called A Touch of Brass, here is a link to that band.

Hi folks,
I have been lurking here for a while and now registered to take part in the forum.
I started playing alto sax 15 years ago but paused for some years. I've also had some clarinet lessons when I was 13. I finally came back to playing this spring. I'm 47 years old now, and my ability (not only) on the sax is still somewhat "intermediate", so I don't expect to start a serious career in the near furture:-) My main goal for now is becoming good enough quickly to play with some local band.
Regards,
Thomas

Greetings,
My name is Greg and I currently live in the Tampa Bay area.
I have been reading the threads and articles on this website for about a year and thought I better sign-up and contribute my 2 cents worth from time to time.
I've been playing saxophone for about 35 years. I've been playing professionally almost that long and have my share of experiences along with all of you fine people.
I have also had many years of experience in the music retail industry and have had the opportunity to visit manufacturers and play on many saxes (both vintage and new) over this time. I am the very happy owner of 3 Rampone & Cazzani saxes (curved soprano, alto, & tenor). However, I have owned many different saxes and have my opinions.
Basiscally, I believe that whatever works for you should be what you need to be playing. If you haven't found the sound you're looking for, keep looking and keep trying. If you are limited by economics on what you can afford to play, at least invest in a good mouthpiece; it will bridge a lot of the gap. Otherwise, don't let a poor horn stop you from making your voice heard, musically speaking.
Good wishes to all

Well, I have been playing on and off since about 4th grade, which was back in 1978. After about a 10-year hiatus throughout the 90's, I got back into playing again. Mostly, I frequent blues-R&B jams and am not part of a working band yet. Looking to see what comes out of this forum.

Hello from Cape Cod. I played alto sax (a Martin) in high school a few years ago. Took a short break (47 years) and started playing again in 2007. I used SOTW forums, ebay and other sites to decide which sax to buy. I first bought a '23 Conn in perfect condition. Then got a bit carried away. The other Conn altos I now own are - '25, '26, & '27 Chus and a '44 VIII. Also have a '30 tranny (art deco), a '30 Tenor (art deco) and a '27 straight soprano. And I have a '20 Buescher curved soprano. Most are in great condition or being overhauled. I play in a New Horizons Band (yes, the Old Folks band - great fun) and a town band. I love to practice and play classical on my alto. Loved the sound of the Selmers I heard at the Houlik retreat I attended this past spring (the picture is an ink I painted of a sunrise at Wildacres). So --- after a little research on SOTW I just bought a '52 Selmer SBA in silver plate with a Mark VI neck. Just got it yesterday and it is an amazing horn. Now I'm trying to make up for that 47 years of lost saxophone playing.

Hi All,
I'm John Yaeger, a full time artist (paintings) living in Arizona with a wife and a house full of ferrets.
A few months ago, I decided to study the sax. I learned quickly to make some pretty scary sounds but they are becoming a bit more tolerable as time goes by. I currently play a rental student alto. I'll need a replacement soon because everyone knows that the more expensive the horn - the better you sound.

Hi everyone,
I'm Chris and I'm a first year student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I started music on ukulele in 4th grade, but dropped it for the alto saxophone in the 7th grade. I pretty much play only classical and band stuff, but I'm currently learning jazz and improvisation from the instructor here. I'm not a music major, but I love my sax!

I'm Kim, Mom to a new middle school band tenor saxophone player. I hope to find some helpful information here because this is all new to us. I went to the music store to buy reeds today and the clerk asked me "what size"? I had no clue what he was talking about and realized I needed help. That is the first step to recovery right, admitting there is a problem...:D
Anyway, I will be browsing and probably posting a lot of questions so be patient with me.
Thanks!!

Hi,
I'm Ryan. Ive been playing alto for over 11 years. I have a Selmer Super action 80 III. I just ordered a Meyer G6 and can't wait to see how it plays. I played on an M5 until it got left in my car and the sun baked it. I also have a Rousseau Classic and a vintage Buscher. I understand the contradiction in schools of practice, haha. I am a recreational player. I studied in college for two years, but decided to take a different professional route in life. Much nicer just enjoying playing. This website looks to be a great resource and I am hoping to see my expectations realized.
Thanks,
Ryan

Hi All,
I'm Nick, Australian and a Chemistry student at univeristy. As of late I've made my on-and-off sax playing into a dedicated thing (thus i find myself here) which has opened up many opportunities in the community. I still play my very first sax, an Armstrong which my parents got for me when i was 10. I've grown attached to it and don't think I could let it go. Over the course of the years I've picked up other instruments but I always came back to my sax.
Anyway this seems to be a fantastic resource for all things sax and I'm glad I found it when i did.
Cheers,
Nick

Hello,
I have frequented this forum off and on for the last year and a half. It has been a great source of information for me, an old clarinet player and wannabe sax player.
I became interested in saxophones after my father, who played the sax in his own band and had a musical instrument repair business for over 40 years, passed away a few years ago. I inherited all of his tools and inventory of parts and old instruments that he had accummulated over the years. I have donated most of the playable instruments and miscellaneous parts (mouthpieces, reeds, etc.) to local schools, a boy scout working on his eagle scout project, and a girl scout working on her Gold Award.
What I have left are several old tenor saxophones, clarinets, flutes, and oboes that I have been reconditioning as a hobby and source of self gratification once I can get them to play.
As a recently retired mechanical engineer, I am fascinated by the workings of the saxophone mechanisms. Of the tenor saxs that I have, the mechanisms are similar but different in many ways. I don't know how these instruments could have been mass produced without a lot of final hands on adjustments and setting.
I look forward to posting in the future.

Always liked the sax and finally decided to try it for myself. No musical experience other then accordian some forty plus years ago. I've been taking lessons for about two months and lurking around here to learn anything else that I can. My wife actually said it's starting to sound good and she doesn't ahve to check to see if I'm killing the cat anymore.

Hi All,
I bought a Yamaha yas-23 couple of months ago. I'm retired so will have a lot of practice time. I've always loved the sax, now my dream has come true.
Getting heaps of enjoyment , progressing steadily.
Have found all sorts of info while surfing this site, thanks for the time you have all put in to make this available,
Rod.

Hi Guys - need some help! I own an old Buescher C Melody and a Martin Alto both which play just fine but I really love the soprano. I play mostly hymns and some contemporary Christian. I really like the more mello darker sound. I am looking to buy a soprano but really can't afford the more expensive models. Have spent some time on the phone with Garrett Hypes of Saxaphone.com. Am considering buying one of his pro models. Any luck with Saxaphone.com sopranos or does someone have a suggested soprano?

I am Jess and I have been playing Baritone saxophone for 4 years. I am in my last year of school. I play a slew of clarinet as well as saxophone. I am little itty bitty becuase I am not what you'd envision your typical bari sax player to be. I am a chick, only 5'4, asthmatic (severely) and I play bari sax and I do so standing up.
I live in Nova Scotia canada and am in my last year of high school 6 years of band guys! Where does all the time go.
I learned on a begineers bari brand new (not the greatest sax actually played on it for two years and was held together with scotch tape! was sent twice for repairs and I refuse to crack the case)
I am curently plaing on an older Yahmaha Bari and I LOVE IT!!!
So Itty Bitty and the beast are here to stay :)

Hello everyone!
I’m very happy to have found such a wonderful website! I have lurked long enough to know there is quality, and many good folks here. I hope to contribute. I will definitely be sending a donation for operational costs.
I started on a Bundy student model alto sax in 1978. I progressed fast and was fortunate enough to travel with the Minico H. S. (Rupert Idaho) marching band to Hawaii that next summer. Since then, music has taken me throughout the Western Hemisphere! I play many instruments now, but the sax is my first love.
In 1980, I hit the Lottery/Holy Grail/Pot o’ Gold at the age of 15 when Kathy, the owner of the local music store, offered an “old” sax for sale to my band director who immediately called me and told me to buy it by any legal means possible. It was a Selmer MK VI alto made in 1973, which had sat in a back room, in pristine, brand new condition, for nearly a decade, waiting for me to find it. Kathy took interest free payments of $13/month for the $750 sale price. In ’82, I paid it off and left for Idaho State University and a Jazz Band scholarship. I still have it. I still play it. Despite the current value ($5k-8k,) I will never part with it.
I work when I should (deputy sheriff,) and play when I can. At around 60 dates per year, music is my avocation and source of effective mental health therapy. I play solo as a singer/songwriter, and with the Shades Of Grey band (Country, Rock, BLUES-grass,) as well as the Celtic-American Rock band, Pladdohg. Check out www.shadesofgrey.info.
I welcome email, PM’s, and all responses from respectful people.

Hey SOTW,
I've been playing for about three years now, and for the past few months, I've been coming here for advice on setup and recommendations, and I finally decided just to use the site to my advantage and create an account. I started playing in 5th grade, with some musical knowledge from piano beforehand, so I had a quick start in terms of learning the basics. I know that practically everyone else on this site has been playing for longer than I've been alive, so I hope I don't sound too stupid with some questions. In this past year, I've started to get more serious about playing, and so have my questions about playing.
I started playing on a Vito replica of a Yamaha 22 or something. This was a good starter horn, but this last summer, I switched too my dad's old Selmer Mark VI, which hadn't been used since the 70s. I'm extremely lucky to have this horn, a 1287--. I was also lucky to have the opportunity to be taught by Robert E. Knatt, who gave me direction and purpose in my musical studies at Washington Middle School. Next year, I will be joining one of the jazz bands at Garfield, and I hope to progress a lot there.
- wow I just looked back at the post. I think I am the youngest person here. I am 13 years old. But, I hope that this will not be held against me, because I'm hungry in the ears.
Thanks,
Ariel
