View Full Version : Noisy Neighbours
We have a neighbour that plays the sax very loudly, so much that it is now affecting our quality of life. I can't have friends around because I find it embarrassing that he is playing so loudly. We have tried to talk to him about it to find a compromise but we are labelled as boring because we don't enjoy his sax! We have even sound proofed the rooms to dull the noise but he still insists on playing against our wall. Any advice?

Are you in an apartment/condo or in different houses/buildings?
Most apartment managers and condo associations can help lay down reasonable noise rules like no playing before 9AM or after 10PM. I lived in apartments for many years and tried to maintain reasonable hours for my practicing so I could get along with my neighbors.
If you guys can't come to an amicable agreement where you acknowledge his need to practice and he recognizes your right to predictable and reasonable quiet periods, then I'd have no problem hauling in the authorities no matter how "boring" I appeared.
Or, you might consider buying him a sax mute (http://www.music123.com/Item/?itemno=102154) and seeing if Mr. Inconsiderate takes the hint!
Thanks for the advice. We live in a semi-detached barn conversion. I guess I will have to just take a deep breath and talk to him.. easier said than done!

My neighbors have told me when it's best to play. It's beats not playing at all or driving to a nearby college to practice. Work it out cat1

Does anyone know of a sound or noise absorbant material that I could install on my ceilings to reduce the noise ascending to the upstairs neighbors?
