I have a tenor Kohlert Winnenden 54 that I bought several years ago for $100 in a second hand store. I recently started working with it and have discovered an interesting tuning problem that someone on this forum might be able to shed some light on. The horn did not come with a mouthpiece so I borrowed two different student mouthpieces from a teaching friend of mine. At first everything seemed fine--I just put the MP on until it fit snug on the neck not worrying about getting in standard tuning with a piano (which is in tune). After a while I decided to put it in tune with the piano and had to pull the MP out about one-half inch from where it was. With the MP in that position C2 was in tune, but C3 was almost half a step flat. If I pushed the MP in to tune C3, then C2 was very sharp. I also noted a lot of warbling from G1 on down.

I read somewhere on a forum that sometimes a smaller bore mouthpiece is needed whenever the upper register plays flat. Just to try something I stuck my alto MP on my Kohlert and it played in tune with itself and with the piano, and also the warbling was gone.

I mainly play a Buffet R13 clarinet, and am not very knowledgeable about the acoustics of a saxophone, but would like to get this Kohlert set up so that I can play with other instruments. Thanks.

you could be either, too tight in the low register, or too loose in the upper or not enough breath support in the upper.
