Wasn't sure if I should put this in the King or the Keilwerth area, but since the sax says King on it....
Anyway, I have a King Tempo tenor. Paid about $150 for it 15 years ago, but never played it much 'cuz it didn't play all that well. I've recently gotten back into playing sax (bari) and am realizing that this isn't such a bad horn after all and that I should probably sink some money into fixing it up. Tried it with a decent mouthpiece (beechler 6) at a friend's house, compared it to a yts-61, and it definitely held its own tone-wise. Anyone have any info on these horns - history, when they were made, quality, etc? Is it similar to a Couf? How much should I spend on fixing it?
Thanks,

George

I used to have a King Tempo tenor. It was a great horn! Big full sound, great intonation, ergonomics were easy on the hands...... With my Ponzol or Morgan mouthpiece I was able to get room filling sound out of this horn. It was able to take as much as I could blow.

How much to fix it up? Does it just need adjustment or a full overhaul? If you were to spend $300 getting it fixed, you are now only $450 in the hole for a horn that should compare well with a LOT more expensive horns. I believe Keilwerth stencil serial numbers match up wtih KW's chart. Go here:

BigDaddy, thanx for the info. Looked up the S/N on the Keilwerth site, it came back with 1967, which looks about right for this horn. The pads all look good, the horn just probably needs a good going over. I'll take it in (after our family vacation to Fla in April, all my spare $ is going to that) and let you know how it turns out.

Have you fixed up the King Tempo tenor? If not, I am a tech/player and might be interested in buying it from you...possibly a trade??

the King Tempo on Saxquest is exactly the same as my Voss...only it lacks rolled tone holes...I think that when Keilwerth acquired D & J they used the line for the Stencil horns.
