About the soprillo :

Mechanically : is it well-built ? Strong enough for daily/weekly playing ? No soft metal keys ?!

Thanks !

I think I'd rather go for a good "waterboarding" than have to hear that again and oh, thanks for the links to the audio files for more punishment.

Interesting to say the least. the tune sounds a bit like "Waltzing Matilda" but i don't know for sure. the tone on this recording form this player sounds sharp and piercing but that could also be the range of this sax. i remember the tone to be less piercing on the Eppelsheim website MP3's.

Tough horn.

I like it when it is added to the top of a large saxophone ensemble to provide brilliance. It can make you sit up and take notice if the player can nail the pitch. Solo Soprillo is difficult but if you can lock into the intonation of the lower saxes it is fun.

Extreme saxophony is really not my bag. Nino's are fully capable of being annoying, why go further. A bass sax can make your innards jiggle, why do we need the contra-bass freakshow.

All that being said, if I could afford it I'd love to have the whole oddball family in my collection.

More listening joy at http://www.soprillo.com/planetsoprillo.php. I like Mandy's rendition of 'Crazy Rag' myself. Saxtek's recording of Blue Skies is on this page too, illustrating what he sez earlier in this thread.

I thought it sounded decent. I've noticed that anything above a soprano sax is used mostly in classical playing. Interesting..

I just love the comment on youtube :
there's actually a instrument more annoying than a piccolo, who would've thought

To answer your question a bit: I played one that belongs to Raaf Hekkema some time ago. It is a very well build instrument, no soft metal or anything.
Anyway, all of Eppelsheim's instruments share the same high quality.
However, the soprillo is VERY hard to play in tune. I only play tenor, and I had a really hard time controlling the soprillo. It's obviously a horn that will need a LOT of practising.

Yes. But you have to give the guy credit...it's hard to keep good intonation on high notes...especially on a soprillo.

Intonation???!!!

You try playing one. (I did and failed miserably)

I'm getting a Tubax early next year. I tried a soprillo, it's much harder to play than a piccolo. But it's so much cooler. My respect to anyone who tries - and in the end it's feel and emotion that counts more than intonation (That's my excuse and I always stick to it)
