View Full Version : Cannonball Soprano. Are they all weedy.
Hi All
Has anyone tried a Cannonball soprano. I tried my mates the other day. He is not pleased with it. It sounds thin and weedy with no decent volume. It has a straight and curved crook. The curved play up to top G but the straight wont play past D. What do you think?

perhaps he should try another mpc or reed set up.I've had no problem with any that I've tried (I also own one), and at a clinic this past week at our local Univ., the sopranos were a big hit with the pros and students...

Are you implying that the Cannonballs don't play? Just because they don't cost what a Selmer does, doesn't mean they aren't great horns. That would be like comparing a Z06 vette and a Farari. I'd take the Z06 and walk all over the Farari all day long.

Could it be the player or set-up??..does the horn need a fix??..my silver straight CBall plays beautifully for what it is.. and no it ain't a ferrari, to be honest I play my Silver Series III Sop on my better dates and recordings.. But, the Cball is a wonderful back-up and club horn and has played fine for me straight out of the box..I could play this Cball as a main horn if I had to..I like the straight neck on both, seems to project better and less resistance..
Hey Guys
Thanks for your replies. I think most of you have said "yes" to my question without saying it. If you know what I mean. Shaun I never mentioned Selmer. But now you mention it, It was sold to him by the store who said it was better than a Selmer. The horn looks fantastic and plays well until you compare it with a really free blowing vintage horn or a new Yani, then you can hear a big difference.

yeah, actually most modern horns don't stand up the vintage, thats why they're so popular...

I liked the soprano better than the CB alto. I thought the alto was very weedy. I hope their big bell horns are better. I'm just partial to selmers. I've had a mark VI tenor for 25yrs and it keeps on taking the abuse.

Thanks Sheryl for taking an interest.
I will certainly tell my friend to mail you. Sorry i've not posted sooner but i have not been on the site for quite a while.
I have to say the sax does look impressive. If you can sort out his problem that would be great.

I played a global series big bell tenor today. I liked it. It was the best looking horn in the store. Sam Ash wanted $2500 for it. It certainly played better than the yamaha next to it. I was looking for a tenor I would have probably bought it. I need to try the sopranos and altos now.

What? $2500?!? That's insane, unless it's finished in solid gold with ivory buttons!
I love my CB BBGS tenor, but one of the things I love about it is that I got it for WELL under $2k.
This "no sales by Internet" policy certainly has resulted in wide variation from one dealer to the next.
