View Full Version : Small Sax: Unnamed & odd fingering

I have just aquired a very unusual Sax..It is smaller than an Alto but larger than a Soprano. The key layout while similar, is different to the standard sax pattern. All the key work is of a very rough casting and the whole machine is chrome plated over brass. There is no name or where made on the Sax and the only single digit numbers are on the underside of some of the forged keys.
I have played and owned many Sax's over the past 55 years and I have never seen anything like this one before.
Any help or suggestions in identifying this instrument would be most appreciated.

Cheers, Falco.

My first thought would be an F Mezzo made by Conn, but there would be markings somewhere on the horn. Can you post pics?

Actually, that would make sense since the keywork is "rough casted" and the horn is chrome plated. What in the heck are those guys stenciling anyways?

Not strictly speaking stencilling, but copying and I think it's Adolphe's original, although sometimes you see them with Bessons (sic) & Co engraved/punched on the bell.

Hi,

I have also just acquired one that sounds very much the same. A friend has told me he thinks it may have come from Europe, possibly France or Holland. He believes that due to the split octave keys that I have on mine it could be really quite old.

He also said that he just very recently saw one on ebay.com in the US that was for sale.

I would also be very interested in hearing more about these sax's. Mine is currently in at the workshop getting a once over.

Cheers...Michael (Tasmania, Australia)

If it's anything like these ones (http://www.trmusicals.com/mainmanufacturing.htm#baby%20saxophone) then it's a waste of space.

Thanks Stitch. I checked out the site and it certainly looks like one of those horrible pieces of junk shown on there.
I think I will dump it off to a 2nd hand shop as a kids toy and hope nobody tries to learn to play on it.
Thanks for all the other comments folks.

Cheers, Falco

If, as seems most likely, it IS one of those Indian pretend saxes there's really no point in persevering with it. No use to man nor beast and not even pretty enough as decoration.

If you remove the bell, neck, and keys, you could use the body tube as a baseball bat.:D

Please don't. Just Make a lamp out of it or put a long screw into it to fix it to a wallmount, but if you sell to an antique shop it will find again its way on the " instruments" ! market.

These things (fake Bessons!) ought to be destroyed, they litter the marketplace and many fall prey of so-called ignorant market or internet sellers (found this in the attic, don't know about saxophones) who probably know very well this things are not saxophones. I've been posting on this forum many times and took the liberty of warning internet sellers (!) of the fact that this is junk in the shape of a saxophone(on the off chance they were honest enough to take any notice).
