Newbie question lol. Considering I've only bought horns that had no need to try first (new Yamaha online buys, etc.), I was just wondering if I was invited to try a horn out what should i try? Play scales? Bring a tuner? Thanks

I bring my classical and jazz/pop mouthpieces and reeds, my present horn for comparisons and a tuner. I play the same things both classical and jazz/pop on each horn I'm trying out and be aware of how the horns reacts, how smooth the transition in sound is as I go up and down the range of the sax. I listen to the tone quality. Play intervals for intonation, checking with a tuner and my ear.

Take someone with you that can play the horn.
Always try the horn in different rooms/acoustics, to get a better idea of the sound.
And Gary is right: bring your present horn.

Scales are good, but I like to take the uneducated approach and just jam.
