Intrigued by a similar thread who has the oldest horn, I am wondering who has the oldest mouthpiece?? I guess it's not easy to date mouthpieces, but it is worth a try.

The winner will get a special place in the Mouthpiece Museum and will be mentioned by name next to pictures of his/her mouthpiece! :D

I have a Goldberg metal circa ~1920 or so.

Still probably not the oldest.

I have what I believe is a 1889 bari mpc. that came with my Boosey sax.
But I guess I'll also lose because my horn was not the oldest in the other thread about oldest saxes.:)
Here's a try at adding a photo.

ThunderWhale and jazzsax07 -- that's great stuff! I'd definitely be interested adding pictures to the Mouthpiece Museum and mention your names.

My guess is that the oldest sax mouthpieces are probably modified clarinet mouthpieces made of wood. I doubt that any of these still exist, but who knows, maybe I am wrong!? ;)

Someone find something that came with Adolphe Sax's horns!

I sent an email to Selmer, asking what the oldest mouthpiece in their collection is (they have a great museum). They replied and said that according to Patrick Selmer, their oldest mpc is 1910 wooden alto piece.

I have a Holton Alto MPC from the 20's - it is the one with the metal inlay for a chamber and vacing - and looks very much like the ones we have seen EXCEPT it has a wing nut built in at the end of the shank - the horn it came off of years ago had no neck cork and the mouthpiece went on to the neck with a metal to metal contact. Again - might not be the oldest, however something I thought I'd mention.

Charlie -- that's pretty cool! A metal-to-metal contact, never heard of! Can you send me pics for the Mouthpiece Museum?

The strangest mouthpiece that I have is a 1920s Selmer metal mouthpiece that belonged to a metal clarinet and was reworked for a soprano. It came with an 1920s Evette & Schaefer soprano and is probably worth more than the soprano itself. :D

Someone find something that came with Adolphe Sax's horns!

I used to have a wooden mouthpiece that was purported (by the seller) to be from an Adolphe Sax alto. I used to use it as a demonstration piece to show students. Someone stole it from me though...

I have the original HR Conn mouthpiece that came with the 1929 Conn NW Series II that I inherited from a relative that passed away. It has the original cap and ligature.

I have a very early wood mouthpiece made by Buffet et Crampon.
