I am trying to help my son with his saxaphone ligature. We just bought him a decent student model Conn saxaphone, but the ligature keeps sliding down the mouthpiece. I understand where and how to place the reed under the ligature, and that the screws should be to the right when looking at the tip of the mouthpiece, but I do not understand why the ligature won't stay in place.

If I tighten it down more it slides down the mouthpiece. If I don't tighten it down more it slides anyway.

Any advise, please.

There is a possibility that the store/factory put the wrong size lig in the case. I would take the m/p and reed to the store and purchase/trade for the correct fit.

I assume it's a metal ligature? If the size is correct (alto, tenor, etc), you might want to look at some fabric/synthetic ligatures such as the Rovners, some BG's, etc. These ligatures (usually black) are known for being quite flexible between different mouthpieces. They definately won't slip, that's for sure. Best of all they're usually under $20.

Well, I think this is just a mistake in words. It is possible to get the wrong size fabric ligature also, that will slip. Sounds to me like you've just got a ligature that's too big for the mouthpiece and it needs exchanging for the right one. No need to go out and buy another one.

If you're lazy like me, and don't want to go through all that trouble travelling.... then you can put a piece of leather, or paper or something at the back of the mouthpiece so it would make the mouthpiece bigger so the lig will fit.... the sound you get might be different, but it really depends what you like
