I seem to have acquired not only an elusive SML baritone, but an original SML Rev. D bari to low A! (I prefer low A ... Bb snobs be damned). :-) A SOTWer noticed some of my posts and offered it to me privately and a deal was struck. SOTW: Membership has its privileges.
I'll let the seller come forward with details if he'd like (to help set the market). I think we both did well, though some might think I overpaid. He probably would have taken less and I probably would have paid more.
It was in the possession of Tenor Madness but Randy's crew should have shipped it yesterday. Give me a week and I'll have a review and pics. For now I just thought I'd let the SMLers in on my joy and anticipation. UPS doesn't jinx, does it??
Don't mind my sig today.

Hey man, congrats! I can't wait to see the pics. As far as UPS goes, did you insure it?

First of all: congrats!
I seem to have acquired not only an elusive SML baritone, but an original SML Rev. D bari to low A! (I prefer low A ... Bb snobs be damned). :-)
Those who created the myth that low As have less power than low Bb baris (because they compared a big bore low Bb and a medium bore low A horn -- hm?? maybe a Conn or a Buescher and a VI?) obviously didn't know SMLs (or German horns).
UPS doesn't jinx, does it??
Dunno how much you paid (probably in the thousands.... of Yen?) but to play safe I'd make sure someone is at home the day it is due to arrive at your place.
I recently shipped out a tenor insured with UPS (thinking they'd provide me with a better service than USPS) and my correspondent told me they just dropped the horn in his driveway....
Sleep tight
PS: don't forget to post your impressions when you get it!

congratulations on your purchase! can't wait to see the pics.
sml's are such terrific horns. i was in oakland's best music a few weeks ago, and a young gent was trying out a soprano in the back room, brought it to the register to purchase--the case (which had remained on the counter) had the king logo, but the geometry of the LH pinky keys was a dead giveaway. that dude snagged himself a dead-mint sml-made soprano for 1200 bucks. if i'd have been a few minutes earlier, and a couple benjamins flusher, it'd be mine.
anyhow, i blather. congratulations again on snagging such an uncommon horn! good on you.

just guess how much margin the music shop made on that one if it sold it for 1.2 grand only... anyway this is a bari thread!!!

Congratulations, you will likely love it! I really love my Rev. D tenor, but I hesitate to gush too much for fear of driving up the prices. If for some reason it doesn't work for you, I might be interested ;) I recently acquired a nice Rev. D alto in gold plate, but it needed pads badly and is in the shop getting buffed out (just kidding!). I have a feeling it will be hard to choose between the two; they're both in lovely shape, but the gold is holding up like... well,... gold! 8-)
