Any opinions out there on the R&C saxellos and sopranos in general? I here that the R1 Jazz version is dark. Really? Dark yet rich? How does the silver plate compare to the gold plate?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Paul: I think your post is in the wrong area. There is an R&C thread. The mods should move it.

I owned a gold-plated R&C tipped-ball sop a while back. I bought it new from WW&BW.

Nice enough instrument but I seriously doubt if the gold plating had anything to do with it, other than to make it look nice. Warm etc. comes from the player and the mouthpiece/reed set-up, not the finish. I'm guessing a silver plated model would be . . . silver, that's all.

I also owned a gold-plated R&C 'nino and a silver-plated R&C alto. All nice saxophones.

I traded my R&C tipped-bell sop away for a nice Buescher TT straight sop and never missed the R&C. One problem for me with the tipped-bell (notice I don't call it a saxello - I also owned a real Saxello and it didn't come close to the R&C for playing ease, intonation and tone) was that it was difficult to put down on stage while I switched to clarinet or alto. Since that time I've seen better stands, but when I owned it, no stand worked well.

If you can afford one, go ahead, they are nice instruments but nothing exceptional - in MY opinion. DAVE
