I just found this discussion forum, tons of information on designing and building recording studios, and most of all soundproofing.

Bill,

I know this is an old thread but...

We just bought a new house and I'm going to convert a basement room into a studio where I'll practice and teach. Two of the walls are concrete, as is the floor. I'm on a budget and don't plan to do any recording, but I would like to add a bit of soundproofing since it's directly below our family room and not too far from the rec room.

Any simple design elements to help soundproof the existing structure?

Thanks!

Phil,

Do you have a drop ceiling or plaster?

Hurling Frootmig,

I'm trying to remember (we've only been in the house once) but I believe it is a drop.

If it's a drop ceiling then you probably want to put fiberglass insulation between the joists.

Start by practicing with the existing situation so you have a baseline.

Is the heating system located in the same room? If it is then you will have to use curtains or some material to isolate the room from the ducts since sound will travel right up them.
