My name is Merlin Williams, and I'm taking students on saxophone and clarinet in the Toronto area.
I've been playing for the past 30 years, and teaching for 20 of those years, including 13 years with the Toronto District School Board.
I've taught students ranging in age from 9 to 70.
I stress proper tone production, technical development and reading skills to enable my students to pursue whatever musical styles they're interested in. I teach all levels from beginner to advanced.
My performing experience includes a lot of big band playing (including several recordings), quartet playing, solo recitals, orchestral playing (on sax, clarinet, bass clarinet and bassoon) and session work.
Feel free to contact me at merlinwilliams@sympatico.ca for rates and available time slots. If you'd like references, there are several people on this forum who know me in person.

For anyone staying/living in Seattle, WA and want to get a boost on improv/theory...
Gary Hammon (tenor saxophone, though can work with any instrument)
Played with some of the greats (Trane, McLean, etc), good long time friend with Seattle jazz legend, tenor saxophonist, Hadley Caliman. He can really help your tone in just a couple lessons. He really tries to make learning chords/scales a lot more understandable by trying to simplify it, which has worked for me. I've been studying with him for a couple of years now, and I have made huge improvements.
I highly recommend him, especially for the younger players!

I don't want to intrude on Merlin's market, but since I'm back in Toronto, I thought I'd let people know I'm out here.
My name is Mike Anklewicz, and I play the saxophone, clarinet and flute in all styles and forums. I have a Master of Music degree in saxophone performance from the New England Conservatory where I studied with Ken Radnofsky. I also studied with Montreal's Peter Freeman and Toronto's Bruce Redstone, as well as done masterclasses with Jean-Marie Londeix (Bordeaux) and Jean-Francois Guay (Montreal).
While most of my training is in classical music, I have studied Jazz Theory, arranging, improvisation and I've performed in small jazz combos, big bands (currently playing with the Advocats, first monday of the month at the Chick n' Deli), R&B bands and Klezmer ensembles (mostly on clarinet).
I am available to teach all ages and levels on saxophone, clarinet, and flute at very reasonable rates, at times that are convenient. I teach jazz, classical (including RCM prep), klezmer, rock and avant-garde music and techniques. I'm also available for clinics, masterclasses and recording sessions.
Please don't hesitate to contact me at m_anklewicz@yahoo.com
Hopefully, I'll have my website up in a few weeks, where you'll be able to get sound clips of my playing.
Thanks!
Mike

I'd like to recommend Jim Guerra to all saxophonists in the Pittsburgh area. He's a great teacher with a reputation for excellence. This is a cat who's been around a long time and really knows his stuff. He's also an active performer in the Pittsburgh jazz scene. Contact me if you want his number.
You're never too old to learn - I've reached an stagnation point/impasse and could benefit from some discipline. Anyone recommend a teacher in the Orlando Florida area?

Can anyone recommend a teacher in the Seattle area for sax, clarinet and flute? I just purchased a base clarinet and would like to get a good sound, but at the same time it would be great if he/she could help with the other horns. A Jazz teacher would be my preference but I would also consider Classical. Thanks.

09-12-2006, 08:15 PM
My name is Angel, and I am new to Birmingham, Alabama. I was recently appointed to the faculty of Samford University and will be teaching saxophone there as well as at my private home studio in the Forest Park area of Birmingham. Students will have access to my library of sheet music and over 1000 concert saxophone CDs. There is space availabe, so if interested, please contact me via email. A bit about me:
Birmingham-based saxophonist Angel Negrin received his Bachelor of Music degree in performance at Duquesne University, where he studied saxophone with James Houlik and Stephen Pollock, and oboe with James Gorton and Scott Bell. Other principal teachers include James Umble, Allen Rippe, Connie Frigo, Robert Faub, and Terry Millard.
Angel has performed extensively as an orchestral saxophonist with the Alabama Symphony, Youngstown (OH) Symphony, Greenville (PA) Symphony, Erie (PA) Philharmonic, and the Pittsburgh Opera Center in works by Rachmaninov, Mussorgsky, Ravel, Gershwin, and others. He also appeared as a soloist with the West Virginia University Collegium Musicum, presenting the Saxophone Concerto by Michael Torke and with the Duquesne University Contemporary Ensemble in the world premiere performance of Todd Goodman’s Concerto for alto saxophone and orchestra conducted by David Stock.
As an active recitalist, Angel has appeared in various venues, including the University of Memphis Distinguished Guest Artist Series as a guest soloist/clinician, the U.S. Navy Band Saxophone Symposium as a member of the ensemble FILTRUM, and the 13th World Saxophone Congress in Minneapolis.
Angel’s upcoming projects include a series of lectures involving the importance of locating, selecting, and listening to recordings as part of a serious practice routine, a CD recording of new recital works for saxophone and piano by young American composers, and the rebuilding of a saxophone studio at Samford University (http://www.samford.edu/schools/performingarts/letter.html).

Ray Guyll at Mills in Redmond, WA. Monster sax, clarinet, and flute player, high school band teacher, community band director, and teaches any reed instrument. Great personality and people skills. However, he is usually full up so trying to get a slot with him can be challenging.
Neil Proff, band director at Lake Stevens High School, teaches out of studio in Redmond, WA and at Lake Stevens, WA. Another stellar player teaching saxophone with emphasis on jazz, blues, and theory. Great personality and people skills. Most of his students are late bloomer adults.
Scott Dart, music major who plays with the DoctorfunK (http://www.doctorfunk.com/) band. Great theory and playing chops and lots of extras like providing transcriptions for favorite songs that he just 'happened to have done' himself. Great personality and people skills. Contact me if you are interested in playing for this instructor.

I'm interested in finding a teacher in the Philadelphia area. I am a student at Drexel University, and will be looking at the programs my school offers, but I'd like to keep my options open, as I am not a music major (Software Engineering major, Japanese minor).
Are there any particularly good teachers in my area, specifically ones who like to teach jazz?
I've been playing saxophone for 11 years, most of which was in my school band growing up. It was a small school, so I was doing more teaching than learning, unfortunately, and I'd like a chance to study with someone who plays my instrument or at least knows how to teach it. :]
(Maybe Neff should move south >_>)

Ferret,
Tim Price is in the Philly area as well; great player.
I'm putting in my two cents as well. I'm a music education major at Mansfield University. I am opening my teaching during the summer to any students in the Northeastern PA area. Beginners and intermediates accepted, advanced players might want to ask for recommendations for better teachers (I'm only a freshman in college...not that good yet, haha). I would mostly teach classically oriented materials, such as things like tone and technique and understanding of the saxophone, but upon request I could assist with improvisation and jazz studies. If you are seriously interested in jazz and improvising, I could also recommend teachers to you in the area. Thanks!

I'm a sax teacher working in the mid-north Jersey area between say Essex county and Princeton. I usually go to students' houses, though I do work out of a studio two days a week. I've taught from the ages of 7 to 60-something, and been teaching for 8 years. I teach saxophone to the advanced level (high college level), beginner flute. I can recommend guys to teach higher level flute/clarinet in the area. I also teach jazz/improv, theory/harmony (more contemporary harmony, though I can give a good intro to traditional classical harmony), ear training, etc. I have a Bachelor's of Music in Performance (sax) from Berklee. 908-723-3343 danperezsax@gmail.com

Not sure if he'd be willing to come out to you, or you to him, but a guy by the name of Ryan Saranich does offer private instruction. He's out of Wilmington, NC and teaches jazz studies to private students. He'll be a junior at UNC-Wilmington this year as a music performance major with a concentration in jazz studies. He just spent this past year on tour and cutting albums (his most recent, Doc's Blues, is a very good album in my opinion).
I can provide you further contact information if you'd be interested.

I'm Eddie Rich and I teach privately in Las Vegas, NV. I have a bachelor's degree in saxophone performance from Ball State University (Muncie, IN). I was the saxophone teacher at the Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton, OH in 2003-04 (They won their division at the Berklee high school jazz festival that year.). I work professionally as a saxophonist and flutist and teach flute, clarinet, and saxophone. I have been teaching privately for about 7 years. My rate is $40/hr. and I make house calls.
My goal as a teacher is to help students develop the fundamental skills they need to play their instrument and also to help them realize the many paths they can choose to follow through their lives as musicians.

I didn't bother to slog through this whole post and I don't think anybody looking for a teacher will either. Something like the Calendar page with teachers for certain areas would probably be a better resource for students.

Hello friends,
I'm a recent graduate of the Manhattan School of Music's undergrad jazz degree program and I'm now looking for saxophone students in the New York City area. If you would like to read a resume I'll be glad to send you one if you send me your email address. I play at music venues around the city and have most recently performed at places like Jazz Fest in New Orleans, the Toledo Jazz Festival, and Dizzy's Club Coca Cola in New York City. I would really like to start teaching in the city and would be glad to hear from you. You are welcome to contact me through email:
mattmarantz86@yahoo.com
Or you are welcome to contact me here on the forums. I also have a myspace page but I don't check the messages on that page very often so it would probably be better to contact me through this page or through email. You are welcome to visit it though:

brian horton teaches over at North Carolina Central University along with wiggins but i'm not sure exactly how you would go about approaching wiggins since i only really know horton. he's a slamming player, you should try him. and if you get lucky, you could try to get lessons from branford too since he lives in durham, but i'd say start out with horton first because i've rarely seen anyone just go up to branford and ask him for a lesson and him accept without him knowing who you are...horton would atleast get you within range of studying with branford since he's taken (or probably still is) lessons with him...
