I have recently acquired a selmer Cigar Cutter Alto Sax in Silver plate SN 14,XXX I would like to have the horn completely gone through. Does any one have recommendations on who would be best to do an overhaul? Also any comments on this model, playing charecteristics etc. I am a beginner sax player but have proficency on the trumpet. Any/all advise is appreciated. Thanks

Tomsak: Where are you located? That would have a bearing on what posters may recommend. While you can ship it to a well-regarded repair tech, if there is one near you, that would be my choice, assuming the person can handle the job.

I have a gold-plated Cigar Cutter - a wonderful saxophone. Good luck with yours. DAVE

I am located in Alaska, out in the boonies so it doesn't really matter where I send the horn, quality workmanship is my main concern...

Tomsak: A number of repair-techs visit and post here regularly, and from what's been written, they have great reputations . . . Sarge in Seattle, Steve Goodson in New Orleans, and others. A few years ago, a co-worker sent off his Selmer BA alto to Emelio Lyons (spelling?) in Boston and was really pleased with his horn when it returned (and this guy was fussy about that sort of thing). Emelio writes a regular repair column in SAXOPHONE JOURNAL.

Maybe you should post a query in the repair thread, and maybe one of the regulars will reply. DAVE

All of the above listed are your best bets.

Send it to Gordon(NZ).
This might make a Guinness Book of Records entry for farthest travelled saxophone.

I once had a cigar cutter alto, no lacquer left, butt-ugly. God I miss that horn.

Don't spring for the cryogenic treatment, your horn will get enough of that during shipping!
