I was wondering about the saxophone I am considering buying. Are high pitch saxophone shorter than low pitch. They guys description is very vague. He says it is 24 inches long.

Ask for a length measurement. C sopranos are about 22" long, Bb sops are about 25 1/2" long.
Generally high pitch is to be avoided due to compatiblity  issues

Then I guess it was high pitch being that it is 24" long.

conntenor: You may want to ask about a stamping on the horn near the serial number . . . something like "H" or "HP"; many high-pitch instruments are marked as such. DAVE

I've got an old french sop that's 23" long and sort of low-pitch (A=443Hz, I think). It's short because it's only keyed down to B rather that Bb - a lot of early horns (pre-1920's) were made this way. You can play everything except the low B pretty much in tune at A=440Hz (the low B is always ~25 cents sharp without something in front of the bell). Everything is okay if you set up for A=443Hz.
Unfortunately, I think 24" is indicative of a really high-pitch horn - A=457Hz springs to mind. See if you can find any clues on www.saxpics.com.
Cheers.
