View Full Version : How much is too much for a The Martin Alto Magna
From what I can gather, this horn in fair shape would usually go for under $1000, but how about a near mint one: 98% original laquer, no dings, no repair history. Would $1800 be too much to pay?
Not to worry...found the answer on the Saxgourmet site.

Most of the Sax gorumet prices are pretty inflated I think. Unless its perfect, has a perfect overhaul and walks on water. If it needs anything thats a lot of money IMHO.
Sigmund,
I agree that SaxGourmet's figures represent the wishful thinking of a guy who repairs and resells saxes. I'm sure that what he sells is in top condition, but a look at Gayle Friedenberg's site, www.vintagesax.com, or Sarge's site at www.worldwidesax.com may give a better indication of what old, high quality horns are selling for. Both of these dealers have reputations for selling great horns in great condition.

All prices on steve's site are for axes in Mint and perfect playing condition.
Not that I'm an expert, but I used Steve Goodson's Buying Guide to buy two saxes on EBay. My rule of thumb is to halve Goodson's estimate if the instrument is dingless, little lacquer loss, and just needs new pads. Of course, it's a great help checking out vintage sax sellers on the net to get a much more realistic cost for a great "old warhorse" player that looks bad but plays strong out of the box.
My next sax is coming from Vintage Sax, straighter shooter service and love for the product.
