View Full Version : What kind of sax player do you look like?

There is another thread relating sax pitch to personality type, but I think there is another consideration: Some people just look like they play a certain instrument. Do you?

Me? I MUST be a bari player, and it has always been my favorite to play.

Alto looks to small on me, so I guess I look like a Tenor player. Also my favorite horn too.

When I first started playing alto suited me I'm sure, cause when I first got a tenor it looked too big on me, but I feel I've grown into it and since high school it's what looks best on me.

What hair I have remaining is red, and according to another thread, redheads don't look like sax players, soooo, If I looked like a sax player, I'd look like an old red-headed one. If you've seen any old red-headed saxes, let me know.

A graying,slowing down,seen better days sax player
Tenor is my 1st love but alto & sop are great too
One develops different sound concepts & approaches for various horns
For me it is hard to beat a tenor's guts

Too bad that Billy Blues, the place in Houston where this was located, closed down. I think the sax is still standing though.

As long as I don't look like Kenny G, I'm fine. I play Alto mostly because my tenor isn't really fixable (been dropped too many times, but I can't complain, it was free!). Most people who watch me play think I'm using a soprano.

I’m a late bloomer alto player!

However, I’m planning an affair with a (curvie) soprano.

I also love the sound of the bari but that would look like the bari playing me (and like my teacher always says: don’t allow your instrument to abuse you!).

I look like a cmel player according to a couple people in my new band.

As teh drummer said (more than likely stoned out of his gourd):

"Dude, I've never seen one of those before, but I don't think it would look right in anyone else's hands."

I'm still trying to figure out if it was an insult or not...

I myself play Bari (I love the low toned woodwinds). Most people though say I look like I should play soprano because their used to seeeing me play clarinet. My favorite part of playing bari is standing in front of the jazz band at the edge of the stage playing what was supposed to be Alto1's solo..... until I stole it! *evil laugh*

At 6'2" and 285 pounds (most of them left over from my bodybuilding days) with both arms almost fully sleeved with brightly colored tattoo work, a shaved head and a 7" goatee and a labret piercing... people are SHOCKED when I break out a horn! I got told three times last night that everyone at the jam session expected me to bust out a flying V and start shredding heavy metal! I absolutely LOVE destroying stereotypical thought!

At just about a little more than 6' and 240 Lb, I look a lot like my avatar. Alto was my first love but they say it looks small in my hands, so I guess tenor looks probably the part. I have received favorable comments on my baritone look (not the sound mind you!), but I think that they don't know what they were talking about.

In my mind I look like an incredibly attractive older sax player with thick, wavy, dirty blonde hair; deep blue eyes you'd get lost in; impecabbly good taste in clothing; a build like Vin Diesel...

In the mirror I look like an old man with a saxophone who's only resemblance to Vin Diesel is the hair.

Someone told me I look like Melvil Poupaud (messy thick hair), Jack Nickolson (a little less hair), or Clint Eastwood (going bald) - short medium versions: I'm 170 cm x 70 kilos.

Hearing me playing sax two or three persons told me if I think I am John Coltrane; another person told Fausto Papetti.

But when I play sax I think I am an awful lot of things like, in random order: an upholsterer (my all-time favorite), the pig fifer (old), a church horgan player (my actual fantasy), a violin player, a drummer, a guitarist, a game director whistle player, a raspberry player, a match striker, a nose blower, a yodeler, an opera singer, a cubist painter, a soup eater, a dentist patient, a pellican, a cricket, a frog, a journalist, a politician, a telemarket vendor, a noisy radio station, a person with a rubber lip and/or with protruding teeth, Jerry Lewis, Paganini etc.

One time that I had a pair of Rudolf Dassler on, a friend told me that they are my saxophone player boots. I was shocked because I bought them because they have the color of the sax pads skin - but that is the stuff that I wear everyday of the year.

Hmmm,
I'd have to say I don't look like a sax player at all.
I'm rather plain, so I look more like a clarinetist or oboist. But can play sop, alto, tenor, and bari.

i prefer my alto with a thick as molasses sound but when i have a Bari it fits the look requirement better then the alto as i am a broad shouldered 17 year old so the bari fits the looks.

i still used to march alto and ever since i started marching bari i get lost less. the alto section still gets esalliy confused though...so use small words in a slow manner and they might conclude that you where talking to them.
