View Full Version : Tritone Jazz Fantasy Camp
The other night (after practicing :D ) I caught a TV show ("Fine Living") about the Tritone Jazz Fantasy Camp. For ~$1000 (tuition, room and board) you stay at what looked like a nice remote resort, eat great food and study and rehearse quite intensely with some pro musicians. I'm sure it's similar to the Aebersold camps but Tritone seemed more geared to the late bloomer. The show followed 3 participants through their week of camp and it looked like they were having a really good time. Most were late bloomer types who were treating themselves or who had received the camp as a gift from a very thoughtful spouse or family member. I think I know what to put at the top of my Christmas wish list this year!

Joe,
I checked out the link. It looks like it would be lot of fun, with some good players.
This past July, I went to the Aebersold week-long Jazz workshop in Louisville. I was somewhat surprised at the large number of older players. I was 59 at the time, and I certainly didn't feel out of place. Lot's older men and women.
What an experience!.... these people are SERIOUS... for six days, 15 hours a day, I was totally immersed in jazz... theory class, combo rehearsals, master classes, faculty concerts at lunch and after dinner, and late night jam sessions. When I got back to San Diego, I slept for 12+ hours the first night back :P
Many of the participants are music or music ed. majors, so a lawyer and "returning player" like me were in the minority, relatively speaking, although there were a number of older players with fascinating backgrounds, including a guy who escaped from Communist Poland with a state-sponsored polka band
The level of instruction was excellent... these people have been doing this for years, and they really have their stuff together. They are very, very serious about teaching jazz. I'm going again next year.

Here's another option you may want to consider, if you like big band playing. I've done it several years, and it is a blast. Most of the guys are older. Some are late bloomers and some have been doing it on the side since high school.

I hadn't seen this thread when it was fresh. Those in Ontario, Quebec, northern NY might want to check out this link. I went this summer. Super nice people, and a good mix of folks, including lots of people returning to music after long lay-offs (like me) and also guy's taking up an instrument for the first time late in life.
cheers.
