I took up clarinet about eight years ago and have played in concert bands. The perennial problem in such bands is to keep the good players stimulated with difficult and not necessarily crowd-pleasing tunes and of course that can be intimidating if one started at age sixty and is not greatly talented. My dream is to play in a band consisting of just older or less ambitious players and play music that is about at senior high school level. I don't see how someone who takes up clarinet or saxaphone [I have just started learning saxaphone and I am seventy now] can possibly [unless hugely talented] expect to play as well as someone starting young and what is wrong with enjoying playing unpretentious music that you and the audience enjoy. I am never going to quit trying to improve but Oh how I long to be able to play with a band of my peers.

We have the exact opposite problem!
Our band director has our band playing CR/CL 1-2 music. Our school plays normal concerts of CR/CL 4-5! She is a major problem. she knows very little about music. she does not even know her instrument concert pitch! Clarinet is Bb. she said C. she says a Bb trombone is a C trombone... what is she doing? did she go to colledge?
Could we switch?
We'll take yours you get ours.(sucker!)
Im kidding. trying to be funny.

Who picked that director? Or did she pick your band? How disappointing that must be. Is anyone talking to/with her? If not, you deserve what you get.

Have you checked out the New Horizons bands?
http://www.newhorizonsband.com/
They are geared exactly to what you're looking for - 50+ y.o., relatively new or rusty on the instrument. They take everyone, and will work with you to build your abilities.

Thanks RBB. I checked and we do have such a course in my home town and I have taken some steps to apply. It may be the answer for me. I love these communities !!
