What I want to do is be able to play tunes the way they used to in the old days, when the family would gather around the piano in the parlor and have a sing-a-long. The piano player could play all sorts of tunes out of books, complete with bass line accompaniment.
I've asked many, many piano players in my area to teach me this, and they say they can't. They can play it, but they don't know how to teach it.
Can anyone help me? Is there a name for this particular style? Is there a method book that teaches this? I bought a book called "How to Play from a Fake Book," but it wasn't helpful. I know how to play chords in both hands, but that's about it.
