I realise that it's seen by most players as sacreligious not to like jazz -- but I'm about to get my first ever sax ( alto )- and I've always loved the glenn millar type of music and the Count Basie type of stuff and "the rat pack " - even old fashioned rock and roll . Blues and jazz I know very little about ! -- I'd like to ask more experienced peple than me - have I picked the right instrument for my musical tastes ??

Trust me. If you like Basie, you like jazz. Jazz has many different styles. Alto is great for big band playing, such as Basie and Miller, but not so common in rock & roll.

Jazz is like your first sip of whiskey. You wonder why anyone likes this stuff, but you keep tasting it till it becomes the best of you. :)

Blow that alto more and more... Then you'll start to get why we like Jazz.

Blues + Jazz = Count Basie!!

Old fashioned Rock & Roll, if you're speaking of the early 1950s styles (before it lost the swing & groove), is basically blues.

As tjonthe road says, play that alto for awhile. Then get a Cannonball Adderly cd, and you'll start to see the light.

As I always say when someone tells me they don't like jazz...
"What kind of jazz is it you don't like???" ;)

Big Bank bands!

This is what attracted me to the sax. Hate fusion, "smooth" jazz.
