PM Woodwinds (http://www.pmwoodwind.com/instruments.cfm?categoryid=6) have a couple. He is a highly respected tech, so I'd imagine they're in decent shape. I've never dealt with them personally....

Good luck!

A little off the main subject but has anyone had the honor to play a mark vi bass?????

Someone brought a mark VI bass saxophone to me for repair. Even after everything was fixed, it was awful - one of the worst bass saxes I've ever played. Low B was almost unplayable until I dropped a small cone shaped bottle into the bell.

Ralph Morgan, who was working for Selmer at the time the horn was made, told me that Selmer knew about the problems and attempted to make their basses play better by soldering various baffles into the bottom bow of these horns. Some of them have a sheet metal baffle. The one I fixed had a large (1" diameter) brass tube soldered into the bottom bow. It didn't help much.

New Selmer bass saxophones are much better.

I've had the same experiences with Mark VI basses. Have tried two of them and they were really quite awful. The tone was stuffy and it felt like I was playing a large baritone sax and not a bass. When I play my old Buescher it's no question it's a bass...

But on the other hand I've heard other bass players praise their Selmer Mark VI basses so I can't say these observations are true for all.

My recommendation is to look for an old Conn or Buescher.

What is their new one, I have played that. Its not their best instrument. The Selmers bass is a clean refined skinny bass note. What were they thinking?

What Bass instrument plays small?

They have nice keys but no biggness in sound, just an average sounding low note that seems directional, not a wide non directional room filling rumble at all. They tried to make it a Tenor with depth below a Bari.
I guess you would use it in place of a bass clarinet or something but you would still need a Bass player to actually play the full Bass notes.
Too refined for me. Doesn't moan like a String Bass either which an American design can.

I have a bass sax which is close to your financial request. It is a Bb IW-601 and I am selling it for $9800

I can send you pictures and more information if you desire

There is a 1918 Beuscher bass sax for sale on PM Woodwind. For only $7000, that seems like quite the deal. My neighbor, Bob Sheppard, swears by PM Woodwind. He is one of their best clients, too. They apparently refurbish the horns once recieved by the seller, and refurbish and repair them. So my best bet is keep your eyes peeled on PM, like what JMac said.

That is VERY nice... Hmmmmm..

Naah, I don't dare, but I do want to... 8-) Problem is, I'd never find enough places to play it to justify owning it.

I'm guessing dark and fat like most Keilwerths. I'd love to stop by and give it a good blow!!! Being in PA I'm not that far away!!!!
