Hey you guys,

What's an altissimo and multiphonics area without any "Lenny". Where's Lenny? I must say I'm disappointed in ya'll. :D

Lenny is something else! The T.O.P. "Knock Yourself Out" solo, mentioned in another thread around here, is really something. I am trying to work out the end part "bumblebee" sound. Its harder than the altissimo IMO.

GHawk don't be too disappointed. We beat the topic to death on the old forum. I think we were just taking a collective break from it for a while. I must admit though I was wondering how long it would take to mention LP. Ok, breaks over... back to altissimo work!

 I have to admit that Pickett's altissimo is in a world of its own. There is another guy the number one session player in L.A. is a guy named Dave "The Rev" Boruff. Wicked altissimo wonderful player and incredible tonality as well. He had a group called dreamstreet released self title album in 1986 from artful balance records. An incredible album not only is he a great sax player your shoud hear his flute and keyboards as well.

I just bought Francis Rocco Prestia live at Bass Day 98....It's Rocco, David Garibaldi, Jeff Tamelier and Lenny Pickett. It is the most of Lenny I can find on video. It's avery loose playing/teaching video...geared toward bass players, but you will get a lot out of it.

In the book "Sax Lessons with the Greats",Lenny speaks lot about altissimo. He stresses on the importance of the overtones (fingering Bb and playing the overtones on that etc.) and recommends the Rascher book (Top Tones for the Saxophone). There is also an etude written by Lenny in the book (and CD),lots of altissimo etc.Worth checking out.

Yep Lennie is da cool dude of altissimo , both on alt & tenor. Gets such a great fat sound too. His alto sound has such authority. Nothin that gigging for 6 nights a week, for 30 years won't sort :)

Just noticed, he's using a sound reflector. These are very effective, if a bit naff looking  .

Hi

Greetings from Norway

About Lenny Pickett, did you know he is playing on bass clarinet reeds? Found out earlier today and ran down to the store and got some reeds....I guess this wont make me an altissimo master but I have to try everything.....Lenny rules!! The new T.O.P tenorist Norbert Sachel is good too...heard them in Oslo 2 years ago. he was flyin' high......
check out the link to my home town jazz festival: www.moldejazz.no Brandford Marsalis is coming!

take care

Norbert is no longer with TOP. The lead tenor guy now is Tom Politzer, and he is the best tenor player that they've had since Lenny, IMO. He can flat play.

Tom Politzer is a Machine!!! The latest T.o.P album is a gem too. 'Oakland's Own in the Oaklnad Zone'. New vocalist, Larry Braggs, is also incredible.

The Tenor players (Politzer and Emilio Castillo) use YTS-875 saxes. Castillo's is an 875b. Hooray!

Tom really rocks. I met him in person after the TOP tour in Munich. Really a nice guy and can play his a.. off
He actually plays a selmer BA he had fixed in munich after it (the sax) had a major accident during the tour. We have an absolutely fabulous tech here in munich that fixed his sax. Incredible work done by Max Frei.

I think Tom occasionally plays an 875 to satisfy the Yamaha endorsement deal that the horn section has. However, the BA is his main axe, I believe.

HI

Tried the bass clarinet reeed that Lenny uses on my markVI tenor. It played very "easy" . I like it, I find it more powerful and distinct than the rico reeds i normally use. But as I feared altissimo didnt come any easier.. :?
Well guess I have to practice or buy a 8 octave midi-sax instead.....

Fair enough. I should probably check my facts before saying random stuff. As long as he uses it some of the time, i'm happy. Love my 875.

I don't think he uses bass clarinet reeds. I think he uses bass clarinet reeds when he plays bass clarinet. He's a studio cat that really knows his doubles.

I could be wrong...

I found this online

Lenny passes along this information about his equipment, in response to numerous inquiries: "I play a Paris Selmer Mark 6 tenor (circa1970) with a Berg Larsen 130 over 0 (SMS) mouthpiece and a number 3 Van Doren (blue box) bass clarinet reed."

Hope it helps.

I stand corrected!

He told me personally, however, as was stated here earlier by somebody,
that the mouthpiece has been so altered that it doesn't really resemble any commercially available models.

I do know that he prefers the classic Van Dorens, because of their thick spine which helps produce the high tones....

Anywho - Thanks for the info.

(Although I'm still skeptical )
