ok i've already posted something like this in the necks section but there aren't many responses so i guess i'll try here. i have the PMXA (67 with the rolled tone holes) alto, i'm thinking of getting a new neck. it came with the VI neck but it's just not working for me and i dont want to be restricted to P. necks. what other necks have the same tenon size? (or atleast close to it so not much work will be needed) many thx in adavance

I believe one of the reasons you haven't received very many responses is...not many players are using the PM altos, so there's not a lot of knowledge about which necks will work. Do you know the diameter of the stock or SJVI necks? I couldn't find anything on their website, so I created a new thread on their forum. When I get an answer I'll post it here.

GAS is right that there aren't many PM alto players out there. In fact, the very few players who have picked up the PM horns have gone for the tenor, which I believe is PM's strongest product.

I've ordered my PM black-pearl tenor and can't wait for it to come!

I could certainly offer my views concerning after market tenor necks with both my P. Mauriat PMXT-66R and Guardala Black Nickel tenors since I have

1. PMauriat Stock neck
2. PMauriat Super Jazz VI neck
3. Guardala Black Nickel stock neck
4. Selmer SterlingPlus thin wall neck
5. Phil Barone Copper Neck

For both the Selmer and Barone necks I had to get my tech to resize them...now all these necks fit both my P. Mauriat and Guardala tenors. Presently using the Barone Copper with my Guardala tenor most and P. Mauriat Super Jazz VI with the P. Mauriat tenor most of the time these days. If I happen to have a very loud gig and I've got the P. Mauriat tenor I will sometimes utilize the Selmer SterlingPlus as it seems to give the P a more open, brighter sound....it is slight but a little bit of a chance compared to the P necks......however I think the P. Mauriat plays best with the P. Mauriat necks...with the SelmerSterlingPlus I have some slight intonation issues on the high end that I don't face when dialed into the P necks.

Again I know you are wanting information concerning altos but hope this might at least give you things to think about.

I got this message back from the P.Mauriat site (Jimmy Chen):

The diameter of PMXT-66R is 27mm
The diameter of PMXA-67R is 24.5mm
We now have a definitive reference for the question.

Now, what are the diameters of the necks you are considering?
