Just wondering, as I am supposed to be playing Tenor in my college marching band come August, but to my surprise I discovered that my The Martin Tenor, serial 198,XXX doesn't have a lyre holder. That or I am not seeing it, which I doubt. So, any way I could rig something up to see stand music? Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

JPrince - nothing wrong with your eyes, I have The Martin tenor s/no 166xxx and it doesn't have one either... But my Martin Magna alto does, hrmmmm.
Neatest way would be to get a techie to solder one on, there is plenty of space up near the neck socket - and most repair shops should have something suitable, even from an old donor horn - but don't get anything done poorly that will devalue it.
Strange... maybe it was an option at the time, after all, dance/jazz band players didn't need a lyre.
Regards, Alan.

Thanks. I at first thought I was blind, because I also have a Martin Bari that does have a lyre holder. Well, for my first semester of college I have about $4,000 more financial aid than I need that I can get back, so I might see if I can get it done out of that. Well, thanks for the info.

I had a Martin Alto of the same vintage. The lyre attached to the neck receiver. You would unscrew the neck tightening screw, place the lyre, and replace the screw. So, unless you have the original lyre, you're stuck. I might have my old one, I'll look around for it. It would be a shame to have to add a non-original one.

All Martin saxes came equipped with a lyre clamp. On my 1962 tenor, it is on the left side of the main tube near the palm keys. I had a 1951 alto with the clamp on the neck, on the thick boss with the neck thumb screw. If your sax doesn't have it, someone removed it.

I have a picture of a The martin lrye from my 1956 the martin tenor. If you want i will send you the picture ( iainterryband@btinternet.co.uk )
is my email address.
Basically you remove the neck tightening screw and put the lyre over the screw hole and use the screw provided by martin which is longer than the standard screw !!!!

ps i would have posted the picture here but i am a bit of a dinosaur on computers

My 58 THE Martin Tenor has an accessory unit with a hole that I assume accomidates a Lyre. I have no Lyre but I believe that it is rigged to receive one. Take a careful look....it looks much different than the old big stickey outy things from the older horns.

The other possiblilty, and it happens, is that someone had it removed...though if it is what is on my horn I can hardly see why anyone would bother....where as the old design is quite ugly and if you dont need it could just go far away and not be missed.
