I had a sales person tell me that with a Selmer MKVI 172xxx late '69 early70's horn the neck has NO serial number and that after a certain serial number on the horns the necks never had serial numbers. I have never heard this...it is true?
thanks, mad

The fact that the serial number is on the neck or not has no relation with the range of the serial number. The fact was that all the horns were made in France but some operations of assembly were made in USA for the US market. These US market horns have generally the serial number engraved on the neck, the European market horns don't have. Just that.

Also, if a horn was made for the US and sold with matching number neck, it's possible the the neck was later replaced by a European neck without the serial number.

I played a cherry ser # 200k MK VI this weekend [in a store] and could not find a ser # on the neck. The neck had the same color as the body and appeared to be the original neck. However, who knows?????
Most of the US horns don't have the serial number on the neck past the early 140K's. I have seen a 167K with a stamped neck, but that's the highest number I've encountered.

Ditto Mad,
My 179xxx has no serial # and a neck that I just got for my silver plate VI (supposedly about a 128,xxx) also has no #.
There was a thread about a year ago on SOTW . Somebody there said they put the #'s on horns for US assembly so the parts would go together right after being matched at the factory. Also might have had something to do with import duties? Was eventually discontinued here also as I recall.

56xxx has serial # on neck 157xxx does not. One could always purchase a stamp set and # there neck if they wanted to. I personally would not.
